I'm not black... therefore i should not say it.. I'm not asain, therefore i should not call anyone of a different ethinicity jap or chink. I'm not hispanic therefore I should not call anyone spics. it's just rude. I mean, obviously people have a problem with it otherwise it wouldnt be a problem.. so i dont understand why stupid young who think they are "cool" feel the need to say it. It's stupid!! I mean i can joke around with my WHITE friends and call them stupid names like cracker or stuff like that.. but if someone like you called me that.. then yes I'd prolly go ape sh*t and kick your a$$. It's stupid and really disrespectful...

QUOTE(taste this @ Oct 8 2004, 3:29 PM)
this should go into debate...

and no one should use the word. even if u think its "cool" well it isnt. its totally laughing in the face of all that history behind the word. i mean seriously, that is so disrespectful. african americans have come a long way to be treated equally, so that people DONT use that word, and now all the sudden it's the cool thing to say? are you kidding me? thats f*cking bullshit..not even black people should be saying it. personally i think that when black people say it, its even more disrespectful, because thats THEIR history; those were THEIR ancestors, and now theyre just going to totally degrade it.

i mean asian people dont like it when people say chink right? why should it be any different with the n word?

and btw, in mean girls, she didnt even say "n*gga please" they mistranslated it. she really just said "please"

theres no word for n*igger in vietnamese. we only have "mi danh" and that just means black person.

The word's meaning has changed over the years, that they're able to use it openly.
I think it's more of the issue of which context the word was used in.
Some use it to make it have the same meaning as 'brother', or in some cases, it's original origin - to label someone ignorant.

When black people now use the word nigger, I'm sure they have no intent of disrespecting their ancestors. If that's how you see it, I don't think it should be your problem...yes, it's their history...if they choose not to respect it, then fine. Hey, it could be that the African Amercian community accepted that it was the past and has forgiven the ones who opressed their people. That they wouldn't hold grudges and know that the use of the word in these times is completely distant from it's significance in the past.

Let's say that some people haven't let go of the fact their people was opressed by the founders of this country. Don't you think that hatred and bitter filled emotions towards white people would just be repeating history, repeating the ignorance, and keeping that chain of discrimination going? Of course, if the word...any word discriminating a race is used in the same manner as it was back then (Calling a black person a nigger, a vietnamese person gook, a mexican person a spic, etc etc), then yes, it is disrespectful and unacceptable. But if it's used in this manner, which is very common:

"Yo, w'sup mah nigga, wut's crack-a-lackin'?"

Then I believe it's acceptable, and has nothing to do with degrading the people who were oppressed and discrimated in the past.

All I'm trying to say is the words meaning has changed.

Okay, yeah... I DO say the "n" word... I don't say it to be "cool"... I just think it's a funny word to say... kind of like how other words are funny to say... like "sneeze" or... "pillow"... because if you say it really slow... [forgetting about which context you're saying it in] it's really funny... niiiiiiiiiggggggggeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr... but it's not like I go around on the streets saying it.... I could be sitting at home talking to someone who isn't even close to being black and saying NIGGER... I'm not racist, believe me... my ex-boyfriend of nearly three years is black... AND I still talk to him... nearly all of my friends are HALF black. So, don't think I'm racist... I don't call people I don't know, or that are black NIGGERS... ... To me, there is a difference between Nigger and Nigga... I actually never say nigga... I say nicca... why? because it's ALSO a funny word... It's JUST A WORD, people, sure it is something that was used in the past... but, really... c'mon now... you shouldn't assume that people are using it against anyone... but sometimes you can just TELL if someone is using the "n" word in a hateful way [especially towards blacks]... THEN is when it's not an appropriate time to use it...
Also, when I was hanging out with my ex-boyfriend and all of his friends [which are also black] they'll call themselves nigger.. in a joking manner...
ex-boyfriend: nigga please!
me: nigga please! [of course i said this mockingly and he wasn't bothered by it]
I've also done the same thing with some of my half black friends...
I'm sure none of you will understand this since you're basically either for or against the use...

just to let you guys know and i dont know if this has been said or not but here goes .

negro means black in spanish

nigger means the slurr that white people used during the slavery times

nigga means the slang that people use today hence the slang that mc's use

and finally since i started this im gonna end it right now !!!!!

ITS OK TO USE THE "N" WORD !!!!!!

do you know why ?!!!!

because if you can make a joke about some other race or even laugh at a racial joke then that means someone now has the right to say something about you ! DURR

for example if i were to make a joke about filipinos(which i am) and some black person were to laugh at it . . . then i can now make a joke about a black person becuase that black person just now laughed at the filipino race

so yeah sorry to brake it to you guys . . . hmmm and yeah that ^^ example isnt meant to be read in a angry type of way OK ! its meant to inform you people about todays changing days

WE STILL ACT LIKE WERE IN THE F*CKING 40's and 50's .. .. .. people wake up and see that color doesnt mean sh*t !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

exactly! ....and also... Does anyone know where the word 'cracker' originated from for white people?

because I've heard from numerous people that the word cracker was given to white people because they cracked whips over the black people's backs... so what do you think about THAT, eh?

Blacks and whites go around calling white people 'crackers'... Maybe a white person feels offended by this because they could be totally against slavery like their ancestors were... and for this, they shouldn't be called a cracker because their ancestors never even owned slaves.

Arrgh, this makes me sick. I don't think going around sayin n*gga is going to make you kool. It's just stupid. It's also rude, especially if you're not black.

Anyways, to answer your question, no.

you totally misunderstood what she said. she means the meaning of the word shouldnt have changed to anything that was in any way humorous or "cool." thats what's so disrespectful. theres history behind that word. to change it is just wrong.. the words being used too lightly.. even if you dont mean anything by it, its just ridiculous. have some respect for the people that worked so hard so that our generation wouldnt HAVE to suffer from oppression.

who said it was okay to call anyone cr*ckers, or any other racial slurr? being black doesnt make any difference from being asian or hispanic. racial slurrs shouldnt be used at all. in any context.

and just because todays society has changed so much that people THINK its "okay" to use these words, doesnt mean that its right. it just shows you how stupid and narrowminded our generation is.

i think that word is soooooooooooooo disrespectful it makes me so mad when ppl use it even black ppl. and for ppl who r sayin it doesnt matter if ur sayin it to ur friends. i have friends and they'll be like "sup my n!gga" and i dont like that. so jus cuz ur that persons friend doesnt really mean they dont care, cuz i used to just ignore it and i guess that made em think it wuz ok, but then i told em i hate that word, and one of em wuz like "o its ok a black person said i could say it" well that made me even madder cuz she still has no rite to say that word even if someone told her she could. personally i jus dont see how using a racial slur is "cool" no matter if u are that race or not

I don't use the word.

But seriously - do KKK members call black people "niggas"? Did the plantation owners of the Confederate States call their slaves "niggas"? No. The word really isn't all that degrading. I also hate it how these days, rappers can say "nigga" a hundred times on an album and have millions of fans, but one regular person can say it on the street and then cause a huge controversy.
