No, you have to buy one if you want something like http://www.yourname.com
But you can get free ones if your fine with the URL http://www.geocities.com/yourname
Or you can get free redirects, like yourname.tk (you can register for one at http://www.dot.tk )
There isn't really a difference between them. It's probaly so there are more selections available like if http://www.sparkle.com is taken, then maybe you can be http://www.sparkle.net .
Though usually websites that end with .org are more of the educational type, but not all.

typically, if you want the name you have to register it. as for the difference between .com, .net, .org, etc...

.com - commerical organizations, businesses, companies
.net - network providers
.org - nonprofit organizations

however, nowadays people are registering domain names with various extensions for whatever reason, so the original use is kind of insignificant.

if you`re going to buy a domain name, why go with free hosting?? then wouldn`t you just be forwarding or some sh*t? i dunno, i haven`t dealt with that stuff in a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng ass time. nEway, BESiDES those listed in this "big book of resources"... when you do searches through Google or something for domain hosting, you get all these high end, expensive things.... i say f*ck all that. look through personal domains because a LOT of times, these people own resellers and, in return, provide hosting services for VERY cheap prices.

when i was thinking about getting my own domain again, i was going to go through kiss-my-kitty.com (i think that`s right). she has a reseller and offers fairly cheap prices. i think someone on the forums here uses her services, too... but yeah, RESELLERS!!!!! look into people with them for domain hosting :].

I have to agree with the person above me. It doesn't make much sense to register a domain name (which costs about $15 a year) and then host it on a crappy ass fre host. I suggest just finding a cheap host. Nothing fancy. Some hosts without php, coldfusio, or MySQL support are as low as $5 a month. If you need php support (which i doubt because it doesnt sound like you know what you're talking about) then the price will be a little more. My votes for best hosting for the money are:

http://cbstaff.com/services
http://mediatemple.net

I use mediatemple.net for my hosting. They cost a little bit more, but they have really good customer support. 150mb storage. 20gig a month transfer.

Or, i have a friend who just bought a domain and he is about to start offering hosting. Maybe you could email him? razbus@razbus.com

There's my two cents... dont spend it all in one place... haha...

i have a website but i don't use it. i have 1 gig of webspace and unlimited bandwith [ which is most likely a LIE ]. i have cpanelx access with mysql and basically everythning you would ever need or want.

i'l host a subdomain for free, i'm not using it anyway, [ except to upload pictures, etc. ]
