QUOTE Oh get over yourself....the U.S. is gonna become a third world country anyway if it keeps up the way it is now...with the economy I mean. It wouldn't make a difference if it's overpopulated and what not. QUOTE Yes....we are a very strong country, but I'm looking at this from a scientific standpoint, not a political one. I know this is beside the point and I don't know why I brought it up, but all I'm gonna say about this is....there is a possibility that the U.S. can become a third world country simply from the fact that the ozone layer is depleting. I know you're thinking well what does that have to do with anything.....well it has lots to do. I'm closing this subject since it's irrelevant. Btw....Japan is pretty far up there in the superpower matter. QUOTE Yes....scientific standpoint. Yes...I do know what I'm talking about. Yes... I do know that it does affect everyone, not just the U.S., the U.S is getting left behind. Yes....the ozone layer. Take for example the car. It runs on gas....but they are now coming up with hybrids. Still, it isn't quite enough. In order to protect the ozone layer fully, they must come up with a car that doesn't run on gas and in order to save money they must come up with something that isn't a hybrid. The simplest chemical reaction is there, but they just aren't using it. It is as simple as H20 and hydrogen gas. Honestly, all natural sources can work to energize a motor. I've seen it. Please....consider all possibilities also before saying stuff like I don't know what I'm talking about. QUOTE Hmm...why is everyone so hung up on double posting? Anyway...there are other factors that may lead up to the U.S. become 3rd world, for example, if Bush was kept as president. Obviously, I'm not going to win this arguement since everyone is being closed minded about the whole deal. But whatever....it's a debate, I suppose. QUOTE All great civilizations or empires fall eventually....example: Egypt, Rome, Greece....you get the picture. The U.S. will be one of those eventually also. Those arent my arguments.. they're someone else's taken from the Illegal Immigrants thread; I just decided to create a separate topic for them.. |

I agree.
It's history...all great civilizations fall from the pedestal. We're no exception. But I doubt it will happen in our lifetime, our children's lifetimes, or their children's lifetimes. |

I agree too. The great civilizations fell. And i don't think we have corrected whatever mistakes those civilizations made. History is always repeated until we have fixed the problems. We are also running out of supplies and our land isn't as rich in materials as other lands. We are in great debt and for us to get out of it we would have to raise taxes, then people would get mad, and there would be political mayhem.

Hmm, if it's a fact that all great things must eventually fall like the proverbial "what goes up, must come down", then doesn't that mean all of the world will suffer that fate, and not just the US?

rome lasted for more than 1000 years, the US hasn't been here for more than 300.
we can still be around a long time. but i can see the decline already... half the world hates us, the other half wants nothing to do with us. our allys don't count, they're too few. i wouldn't be too supprised if N. korea and Al queda and the iraqi resistance banded together. they've got a common enemy and the world isn't going to stop them. lol... i can see it now... many years from now... Age of empires: the age of the empires. america has fallen and now the world is up for grabs. no, we won't become third bworld, we'll become extremely unpopular. but we are too conservative, the third world countries will overtake us. then where will we get our cheap labour? ![]() |

Well, if we're so unpopular and if people hate us so much, then why do people look to the US to lead for certain things such as against aids?
It's too hard to make people happy; people of all cultures and backgrounds are fickle. |

Well, I'm sure we can't last forever. I agree to an extent, but the first few reasons why we'd become a third-world country kind of made me pause.

This is ridiculous.
THe United States would have to have negative growth for a sustained period of several decades to be reduced to third world country status. As now, our economic growth far surpasses our population growth. |

Empires, dynasties, kingdoms, nations have fallen before us, and of course with murphy's law applied, we're no exception.

Okay, but the real question is, will the U.S. be a third-world country in our lifetime, as this person claims?

I think maybe it could, maybe it couldn't. It really depends on what happens in these next few years. Suppose if we were to suffer a great depression and be in a war at the same time, we wouldn't have any supplies, we don't have as many fervent allies as we had or could've had before. No one really knows. You cannot say it can't and you cannot say it will by statisics and things, because there are no statistic when it comes to disaster striking.

I can't say for sure, but I can say that, with an extremely high probability, the US will be doing just fine.

Nothing of that measure would happen unless our economic/government system somehow change for the worse. Of course there are other possibilities, but they're all highly unlikely to happen.

9/11 was highly unlikely. I think that we mess ourselves up by thinking nothing horrible could ever happen to America. I think us having no precautions during clintons time could have be a factor in 9/11. I think Amerca can and will come to its fall if we continue with this moral deprivity. And also if we don't plan for the future. Civilizations fall because they only worry about the now and not the later. The later is what we should focus on, well atleast for a good bit.

Moral depravity?
Are you implying that 9-11 a punishment from God? (as some people have suggested?) We were attacked because they can't beat our army. If you are at war with someone, and they are crushing you, it only makes sense for you to use unconventional tactics -- such as terrorism. If we stopped treating the Middle East as a proving grounds, and just withdrew our forces and established trade normalcy, we could subsntailly scale down terrorist attacks against us. Moral depravity has nothing to do with it. Unless by depravity you mean not living by the letter of the Ko'ran. |

Most of the time when an empire "falls", it is merely transcended and replaced by something better, the only major exception being the fall of the Roman Empire. When the British Empire "fell", it was replaced by the Modern UK, which has developed and created a quality of life that is superior to that of the old British Empire.
Similarly, the American Empire will end ... but the system that replaces it will undoubtedly be better. |

our economy isnt bad even when the stockmarket crashed we werent anywhere near third world status. the ozone isnt being depleted, that was just a scare like getting aids from a hand shake. It has been scientifically disproven. The only way The U.S. could be turned into a third world country would be if the entire world turn's against us and cuts off all exports and imports. Then our country would slowly be drained of it's resources and eaten away by the cancer of the dumb assed protestors who care what the world thinks of us. The whole process short of a civil war would take an extremely long time.
