Where did these smilies originate from?, Do you use 'em ? ^_^ >.< ^^; ^.^ -_- Options

I just thought about it cuz my friend who's non-asian just asked me "what does ^^; mean?" it was kinda hard for me to explain cuz he didn't watch anime and i didn't just wanna say it's a set of eyes with sweatdrops on the side.. he wouldn't really grasp the idea there.. most of my asian friends understand those smileys, i.e. >.< , ^_^ , ^_- , ^^; , -_- , etc... , and the emotion accompanied with each of those.

Do any of you guys use it? Or is it just something that anime fanatics use?

i just prefer ^_^ over tilting my head for a :)

2 or 3 years ago i watched dbz and dragonball, those kind of animes (i was in 4th/5th grade)
now i watch inu-yasha and some others on toonami, i read ranma and bone

^^ <-- and whatever smileys have those eyes, are from Anime. See, when the artist makes them smile, their eyes kind of turn into that.
Meh, not saying it's anime only. Some of my korean friends' eyes disapear when they laugh.
I always ask if they can see while they're laughing...I never got an answer though.

Yes i use those smilies. I got it from playing a game called Ragnarok online. I only use those smilies when "cb smilies" are not available. I mean how awesome is the "shifty" smilie.
