okie dokes... i was in the christian and atheists room thingy and had said i was catholic. and well i was wondering if anyone has any strong beliefs about the changes in vatican 2 church
let me first of all say this... there are differences between catholics and christians... catholics believe in the more traditional mass (mass is in latin, stricter rules about communion, dress code etc.) and well christians believe in the vatican 2 church for me theres just to many changes to even believe in the vatican 2 church... it seems like its been watered down... for me i go to church in a nice skirt and blouse with a veil on my head. when i used to go to a vatican 2 church, i could wear shorts or wahtever... on the few times i go there (only because thats that only church where i am... trust me i wouldt go by choice but my parents dont listen to me) i see people wearing things that u couldnt even wear in school much less in a place of worship. and church should be a solemn time shouldnt it? umm... before i write an essay ill stop here. id love to ahve a good debate on this subject ^^ |

I'm sure there more differences in Catholicism and Christianity than what one wears to Church right? As for what's appropriate for Church, does the Bible not instruct people on dress code or does the Father/Priest tells you that, or is it common sense? |

That was the reason why english mass was allowed. The pope wanted the people to follow along in the mass, which was hard to do when it was said in a language they could not understand. In my opinion, you are only Christian if you belive Christ is your only Savior of your sins, and he is the Only God, and you're passion is to serve him, and that goes for everybody that belives this, Catholics, Baptists, Methodists... and so on. |

im sorry... guess i was a lil vague with my descriptions... my bad
the vatican 2 church is the "new" church with all the different changes from the traditional mass eg. the laguage in which its said, church dress code, and basically what they say in the mass itself... traditional roman catholics listen to mass in latin... but most parishoners have a lil book they has both the latin and english versions of the mass (one side is in latin the other is in english) that is how we follow along and understand whats going on. as far as dress code go yes its more on the priest thinks but its an issuse of decency and respect. u come to church to worship god not to show how fashion conscience u are. u were nice clothes cuz ur in the presence of gods house mass could be said in other languages (these changes is what is now known as vatican 2, made in the 1950s to inda please other religions... im a lil bit fuzzy on all of this part but basically one pope wanted some changes to be made so that the religion would appeal to more ppl) but TRADITIONAL roman catholics only listen to it in latin. its one of the big differences christians are not exactly catholics... for instance my friend is christian but she doesnt believe in the virgin mary. i do. some christians only pray to god and jesus but catholics ask favors from saints and such to gain their help hope this helps clear things up a lil bit. sorry i kinda confused everyone |

Christians arent Catholics.... Catholics r a division of Christianity.... and Catholics arent the only division taht asks for favors from saints.... Im orthodox and thats what our division is based around.... each different family tree/ common ancestors.... have a certain saint holiday that has been with them thro time.... and we actually celebrate it.... Svete Nichola.... or Saint Nicholas is our family's and we celebrate it every year on December 19th |

Chrsitianity is a religion but things like baptist and stuff are denominations so you can be a christian and still be Catholic. I don't know alot of about Catholoism. I know major differences is praying to the virgin mary, and worshipping her and paul and people, and purgatory(i know that Orthodox Catholic do not believe in that)

Catholic and Christianity arent different titles. all those things such as baptist, methodist, presbytarian and what not. They all believe in christ. that he died and rose again. He died for our sins and took the humility of dieing on the cross for us. Thats what christianity is really about. So dont go off saying that Catholics and Christians are different. its the absolute same thing. |

catholics do not "worship" the virgin mary. we only worship god and god alone. we adore her and pray to her but to worship her is a sin sorry... had to clear that up |

ok listen...its all one religion...then it breaks out to smaller DONOMINATIONS within the RELIGION...the religion is Christianity and we break into donomintations, catholic being one of them...they r still Christian thou....

catholicism is a form of christianity.. however, what i think you're comparing is the difference between the moderate catholics and the more traditional orthodox roman catholics?
i also find many christians i know do not recognize the pope, whereas catholics do ;o |

Christianity and Catholicism have many similar beliefs and customs. The main difference between the two is obviously the cause of the Great Schism. Which first separated them in the first place.
Catholics have religious icons while Christians believe that icons are a form of idol worship. Catholics have a pope who oversee the religion, Christians don't. Theirs issues over chastity I believe and probably more. But that's the general. Once you head into the denominations of the religions it gets more and more picky and the differences become more obvious. But to me they have similar backgrounds and all tend to have developed by copying others. No I'm not religious just like to read. I was Catholic at one point. But I couldn't get through with my Confirmation. I didn't want to. Well I haven't been to church in a while, but when I did go I never wore shorts or denim. I had to dress up somewhat. Yes I agree. The Vatican has been 'watered down'. |

Christians: They do not believe in saints and they dont pray to virgin Mary. We go strictly by the Bible. We could wear shorts at church, but we HAVE to wear appropriate clothes too. well....
dress code isnt the only different...theres the matter of conduct, receiving bread/body wine/blood, and smaller issues like praying to mary and the saints. i could go on for days about the differences....but i wont. [ehe aiming for theology major woot]. but on the issue of appropriate clothes....yea, i definitely feel that people should dress accordingly and not disrespect God. |
