Some c**t downloaded the new Sherlock Holmes movie while connected to my unsecured wireless network and I got shit for it. I managed to get WB to make it a warning and not a lawsuit, but shit still sucks. I'll avoid pirating any WB movies for a while.

That sucks and very inconsiderate for that person to use your wireless. Do you know who it was? A neighbour?
But yeah we've gotten a warning before too.

I had the network set up for public use, which violates the TOS I had with the ISP.

I just completely disabled the wireless part of my router. My entire network is wired anyway.

You should have checked the logs for his MAC address and have it so it routes all of his traffic to last measure.

That's not going to do a whole lot of good if all he's doing is bittorrent.

I sure do love my isp. AT&T has never given a crap. And I've downloaded a lot of stuff.
So, I take it you are using a proxy now?

Were you aware at the time that while people could mosey onto your unsecured public network they could leech your pirated files?

I had just set up the router a few days ago. I honestly haven't had time to get everything secured.

Bah, it's likely they would have gotten curious and checked if the connection was still up via their browser.

I didn't think people actually got caught for pirating. I thought it was all scare tactics. I still think this is the case, givin the fact they just warned you. That's such bullshit.

Anyway, my real reason for posting: Holy shit, a whole day went by and NOTHING got posted in the lounge? This place is almost officially dead. :(

At first they were going to sue for $50,000. I had to talk them out of it. I don't they tried to take my paycheck for the next eight years to scare me.

Either way, you shouldn't have gone down without a fight. Don't let the bullies intimidate you, especially if you're right.

I'd tell them to go ahead and sue. If they weren't bluffing, I'd bring the router logs to court as well as every one of my WiFi capable devices, show them that the MAC address doesn't match, then file a counter suit, hoping they give me a decent settlement.

And optionally, build a dedicated torrent box with the settlement money :)

As great an idea as that sounds, I don't have the money to fight a big company like that.
