i think one of my biggest pet peeves is people who don't seem to be interested in anything. you ask them what they are interested in and they can't even hardly give an answer, or they can only think of one or two things. why are people so uninteresting? do you feel you are an interested person?

I'm not sure what turns me off more: people who aren't into anything, or people who claim to be interested in everything. As for the latter, I'm talking specifically of people who say things like, "I like all music" when you ask what music they like. All that says to me is that you don't give a shit about music. I'm not asking you "What is the only music you will listen to?", I'm asking you what your favorite music is. Gah.

But yeah, I agree with you. Similarly, I'm turned off by people listing things like "drinking, hanging w/ friends," and so forth on their Facebook page. I dunno, I always think it's uncouth to add "drinking" to your list of hobbies. I mean, sure, I like to drink to, but...I don't call it a "hobby". And hanging with friends? Yeah, 95% of people like to that, but what do you and your friends like to do?

But your last question is most interesting, probably because since my second or third year of college I've had a fear that I'm a dullard and not very interesting. I think being boring is one of my biggest fears, to be honest.

yeah i think i agree with your first point. also because if they say they listen to everything, then you will say "oh so you listen to *insert genre here*?" and they say no i don't really listen to that much.

ahahahaha yes hanging out with friends is an example i was going to give a what people typically say. drinking and smoking weed are typical responses. drinking isn't a legit hobby to me unless they are the types who go wine tasting or drive 3 hours away to purchase some locally made beer. that's the kind of thing you have to do for alcohol to be a real interest.

i don't think you are boring or will be boring. not that i know your life that much but i think how people post on a forum can be a pretty good indicator of how boring or not boring they are. it's not like 90% of yours posts are from the "what's the weather like?" thread.

you read books so that's also a good indicator to me of how boring a person is. i am suspicious sometimes of people who don't read books. if someone likes to read then that usually seems like a good indicator that they must have interests to find books about in the first place.

i was pretty into the word indicator in this post.

That's another thing: I always shudder when people write something like "I don't read much" under the Favorite Books category on their Facebook profile, especially when it's a friend of mine from college (or that is in college). You're in college, but you don't like to read...? Okay, maybe I can understand that. To each his own. But you're actually comfortable enough with that to admit publicly that you don't read? So you're in college and you think it's okay to never crack open a book unless you have to? Maybe I'm being pretentious, but I think it really says something about our culture that a good number of people -- maybe not a majority, but a fair number of people -- readily admit to not reading anything at all, not even trashy pulp fiction novels like Twilight or whatever. I'm disappointed that books are so often dismissed by people my age and younger.

(I'm also a bit skeptical of people in college who go absolutely ape-shit over the Harry Potter novels, but I can understand it holds a lot of nostalgia for people my age; plus they're decent enough books and at least people are reading them.)

yeah it's almost as if it's cool to say you don't read much, and not cool to list a bunch of books you've been reading. it's messed up and all backwards.

I LOVE HARRY POTTER. but yeah, i grew up on harry potter, so it's nostalgia to me, even though i think it's a good story. i read before harry potter.

i would rather people read twilight than not read at all. that's another thing my girlfriend and i argue about, but she's pretentious about literature even though she doesn't like to admit it.

that's a good topic question, is it better to read trashy books or not read at all

Haha, funny you should bring that up. I suddenly realized a couple months ago that I was a bit pretentious when it came to literature, too. I'd never even noticed; I was really into writing at one time, so I have strong opinions about books. It never even occurred to me that I sounded like a dick sometimes. In fact, a few weeks ago I was talking to a friend of mine from college, and I mentioned this revelation. She said, "Really? You never knew? I thought you were an arrogant ass the first time I met you. That's why I wanted to be friends -- I wanted to find out how you could be so arrogant."

Do I think I'm an interested person? Yes, I find a lot of things interesting. Do I think I'm interesting? It probably depends who you ask.

I'm not asking you "What is the only music you will listen to?", I'm asking you what your favorite music is.

What about "I try not to restrict myself to any one genre," does that work for you?
"I enjoy all music equally, but I most often find myself listening to Jazz and it's derivatives." Is that the kind of answer you're looking for?

To some people, it's more about the composition than the genre. Of course some people only listen to songs because they're popular, and not because they're good (aka a ton of current popular songs)

I can hold a conversation, and more often than not I know a little bit about everything. However if there is a topic where I know nothing about, asking plenty of questions remedy the lull of conversation. People usually open up when you show genuine interest in them.

However there was one conversation with one person where I asked her what type of music she liked and she said "anything thats popular", yeah I found it hard to hold a conversation with someone that bases their interests on mass opinion and unable to form their own.

I didn't say anything about genre. I don't care if someone answers the question "What music do you like?" with a bunch of genres, a bunch of bands, a bunch of albums, a bunch of individual songs, or some combination thereof. Answering "What music do you like?" with specific interests doesn't imply you're restricting yourself, but c'mon, anyone who's into music has favorites.

For me it depends on what the subject is on.

If it's something I can easily talk about with no trouble, I prolly sound "Interesting"
But, if it's a subject I have trouble explaining about, I will usually only say like two words ^^;;

I usually don't get asked what music is my favorite. I usually get asked "So, what type of music do you listen to?" and that's a really difficult question to answer, so I usually just name off some artists that I really like or have listened to recently.

I really don't like it when people have a bunch of questions about my interests and what I like, because when they see me it's usually fairly obvious... I just think it's weird when people ask those types of questions just to make conversation. Chatting online is a little different, since you can't be around the person and their interests aren't as obvious.

I don't think I'm a very interesting person. I'm pretty average.

i am interested in all kinds of things but i don't always talk about them much. i think it might be because i often don't see the point in talking about certain things before they happen. so if there's something i'm interested in, something i want to do i'll keep it to myself until it happens or is about to happen. i suppose that's only one possible reason.

maybe they are being indecisive. I believe I am an interesting person in certain topics.. does that make sense? if i have something to say, i'll blurt it out when necessary. i won't blurt out certain things like "your dress looks ugly or i don't like your style." i will only do that if someone asks me to or to my friends jokingly. i might something interesting only to start a conversation. i will not blurt out interesting things unless asked.

i don't like it when people keep saying "i don't know." even though I may do it at times, but it's only for food. kinda sad.. lol

I think that I have a lot of interests but it is hard to sometimes express a lot of them. I have used my mens blog as an outlet for some and for others such as traveling, beer and wine tasting, tailoring, etc. I am learning more and more about. If there is one thing that I do detest though, it would be people that are indecisive.

most people tend to be..."mainstream" and mainstream people tend to be relatively uninteresting.

when i say mainstream people, im talking about the same people you listed that say "drinking,boys/girls,hangin out". typical people that cannot formulate an interesting creative thought. but also tend to have relatively potent social lives because they abide by the mainstream principles that most social "things" pertain to.

random fact

these same people also tend to not listen to most music outside of the radio.

or cannot truly assess multiple genres of music.

i've always been alittle different from people even from a young age.

i was always into art. it was one of my strong suits, so i think for any truly artistic kid you have always had a different mind than most.

i was also a late bloomer when it came to girls, it seemed like everyone else was in a race to validate themselves as "big boys/girls" while i was sitting there drawing lol.

i also think the majority of people that partake in stuff like forums for example are going to be generally more "interesting" than alot you might experience in day to day life.

forum members tend to be more inquisitve, like for example, its hard for me to find many people that would even think to ask such a question like JC is asking in day to day life. most people don't really want to think on that level. but on a forum, its pretty much day to day shit.

do i think im uninteresting? no, i think i can be very interesting. but sometimes interesting people tend to be introverted (like i can be sometimes) and therefore misunderstood as uninteresting.
