So I am not the best graphic designer, but I would love to improve. I'm working on my portfolio for school.( I'm majoring in web design) I did this logo for my friend who started a club at my school. It's called Universoul Language Society. It's basically an audio club. He told me the stuff he wanted in this design and so I created.

I did this a while ago, but I want to hear other opinions. My designer friends said it was weird, others said tacky, and some liked it..ect. I did all this work in photoshop.

If it is tacky... or bad what can I do to improve the overall design or anything else?

I'd agree with the tacky comments, though there's not much I can say to improve it.
Keep trying though.

^Lul wat? There's plenty to say so she can improve it.

-The orange/yellow/red planet is low in image quality.
-All the colors you used don't match at all (use color palettes. Colour Lovers is a great site for that).
-There is just too much going on in the background with the notes and swirls.
-Font effect could use some work. Kind of reminds me of that Word Art thing in Word.

Tbh, I'd just start over. :/

first you need to understand the basics of logo design and go from there. here's something to get you started:

you are surrounded by good logo design everyday everywhere you go. you just need to be reminded to pay attention to it. just think about whether you would be interested in or compelled to buy something that had that logo you made on it. i'm guessing you wouldn't because even if you are unaware of it, in the context of the real world, you too would probably find that style of design tacky.
