I've veganized and vegetarianized meat-based foods from restaurants, namely Big Macs and Patty Melts.

You know it might be strange but I don't bother trying to replicate recipes from other restaurants. I like the Idea of keeping the said recipe a treasured secret so when I go out i can treat myself to it rather then make it at home whenever and the element of surprise is taken away.

I don't like to re-create recipes from restaurants but I do draw some inspiration from different menu items. Restaurants have become tricky business for me, since I now have to keep my daily sodium intake so low. I'll have a bite of something at a restaurant and then try to make a more heart healthy version at home.

what do you try to keep it at? I was shocked when I found out that like a lot of potato chips are super high in sodium. About 2000 mg or less a day. When the whole hypertension thing came to light, I was shocked and very dismayed at the overwhelming amount of sodium in everything. It's pretty sad. Check out the labels for flour tortillas. It's depressing. Anything prepared with baking soda really. I get most of my food from Trader Joe's now (they have some awesome heart healthy food available).

Okay, I was thinking you were trying to keep yourself at less than 1000. I learned that like a bag of salt and vinegar chips for $1 has like 900mg of sodium. :P I try and not eat stuff too high in sodium. But my body is not yet subject to nature's woes. I didn't know that about flour tortillas.. :-/ Heh. If I don't get my blood pressure readings down, I may just have to limit it to 1000. Damn, that would be such a nightmare though. Oh and typical pancake mix is out of the question too. Bleh. I have to order some no sodium baking soda and baking powder. What a pain in the ass. haha |

My mom has to keep her sodium really low, too. She complains to me about it all the time, and I always get on her case when she goes out to eat with her neighbors or my dad (because they don't have any patience to help her with the menu and compromise with what they order). The good thing is, though, is that I am usually the one to take her grocery shopping so I'll usually check labels for the things she needs to watch.
My brother is a whole different story. He didn't know anything about food. He's slowly learning how to cook (things besides frozen pizza and toast :P ) He even gave up alcohol!! I'm so proud haha. It was so strange to see him eating a salad. He used to eat out at least once a day, if not two. My family doesn't really go out to eat much, so I don't even have any "favorites" at restaurants. |

I don't know of any restaurants that make it (sad), but homemade arroz con leche is the shit.... when my dad makes it, since I have no cooking abilities whatsoever.

Homemade cake is awesome... unless the person making it isn't very good at making cake. Homemade blueberry muffins aren't as good as the ones out of a box, though. I blame it on the flavoring they put in the flour mixture.

This is true, except when it comes to homemade cake. Not like betty crocker cake.. like all homemade... What? I've made homemade cake more than a few times and they always come out fantastic. If you can follow a recipe and have an oven thermometer, your baking should come out fine.
