what is your initial reaction? and is that bokeh background a little to girly looking? just better without? im having a hard time deciding. It's lacking in the pizazz area.

It looks pretty good. The background reminds me more of a painting than bokeh though lol. At least from my perspective. But the text and everything is nice.

rather plain. My monitor's contrast is too high to see any of the circles without changing the angle of my monitor. :P but I think that you should add more leading in the body text on the first page. The links should be either on top of the box, or at the top of the box, not in the middle.

whats leading?
and i agree with the links.
I thought about changing the background color.

also, if you remember when i didnt have photoshop and asked you for that picture?
well I ended up not using it for what I was working on and thought about using it now. it seems kind of punny cause its a blank canvas.

but that didnt really work out.

Now the background is too busy -- stick with something that is more like your first layout. What I would do is put tabs or something for behind the links so that it isn't just text for your navigation. In addition to that, you can put more than just one section to your site. (There's only a single window for a single section, that's usually what makes a site look plain). The colors in general are a little muted, but you should try using different colors rather than just varying degrees of a particular color. That might help you out.

If you meant for it to look like bokeh and I saw it as something else, then mission failed. So it's bad lol.

I agree with Jon on his suggestions. It's lacking you and your personality.

This. The text sticking out of your content box looks a little strange.

This would definitely add some interest to the layout. I like what you have now, though, so stick to muted colors.

I think ill add some colors in rollovers maybe. because i dont really want to change the bg color. and i will add some tabs. I am having some difficulty with the floating so cross browser compatability may be an issue. it'll work though.

are you sure instead of tabs i shouldnt use an arrow above the links? i was planning on doing that. and then using some php to keep the arrow above the current link.

I like the wood one better but there's something about the top portion of your table or whatever that looks weird.

I like the wood one much better, but I'd change the fonts and sizes for text that you have. Perhaps a sans-serif for your body, and make the navigation text smaller so there is a reasonable margin in the tabs.

That gray wavy thing looks really unnecessary. I think the text that says "Joseph Cohen"'s gradient could be a bit better, maybe you should try the text without the gradient and just a pure solid color would be better instead?

I like the wooden background better, but the simplicity of the monotone one better. Maybe a combination of the two? Though, I'm not especially font of the switch from Lucida Grande (Sans?) to what looks like Arial Black for the copyright. Also, the name/navigation setup might be too simple. Not much about that one really grabs me, except for the fact that it doesn't have overbearing shadows like the wooden one does.

Yeah! That's what it is. That gray curved line looks... odd. Something looked off, I just couldn't put my finger on it. But I'd suggest doing what Beenly said.
