Things to see in NYC in one day? Options

I'm driving up to Smith College next week with some of my family and we've decided to stop in NYC for a day. It will be a Sunday so I don't know if many tourist attractions will be open. We don't plan on spending tons of money (minus any food). We just want to walk around and see the city. What are some places to stop at?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Bronx Zoo are both fun to see. Both of them are attractions at which you could easily spend more than a day, but you'll get to see plenty of cool stuff in one day, too.

maybe try museums like the met (admission $ is suggested, but you can technically pay nothing), guggenheim, etc. the cloisters would be gorgeous at this time of year. there's a bodies exhibit in south street seaport that puts most others to shame. you can go window-shopping in soho - lots of cute little shops if you stay off broadway, then bigger stores like topshop if you stay on broadway.

huuuge dylan's candy bar near serendipity (which is really good for deserts but a bit pricey).

if this is your first time and you wanna do touristy things, lots of stuff is open on sundays. go through time square/midtown. wax museum, broadway shows, off-broadway shows, comedy clubs, etc are there.

just wander around. if you're too lazy to walk, get on any subway and pick a random stop to get off of and just wander around. fun as hell, you get to see all kinds of weird shit.

that's what i did when i was in paris. it's the best way to see nyc!

tbh i think my best nyc experiences was walking down broadway from campus to NYU. feet hurt like a bitch later on, but it was really fun.

I mean, if you can't go to NYC often, then I suppose just wandering around is not a good idea since you might end up walking through, say, Harlem at night, but if you can visit more than once a year, you really open yourself up to new experiences by walking through the various neighborhoods and discovering attractions on your own, rather than having a "canned" vacation on a tour bus or something.

one of my tips to friends who visit from other places: rather than go to on those $40/person two deck tour busses, get on a regular MTA bus for $2.25 instead. here are the bus routes: http://www.mta.info/nyct/service/bus/mhtnsch.htm. i take the M5 and the M104 often when i have free time on my hands before school. i also recommend the new hybrid busses 'cause they have bigger windows.

man, throughout summer, i've gotten about 8-10 "security alert" emails from school. not sure if i'll be walking outside at night by myself anymore >.<

A few weeks ago, I was coming home from Long Island, and I got lost in Jamaica at around 2 am (long story). Spent a while wandering around trying to find a working pay phone, since my cell phone was dead. I had picked up a map of New York City when I'd become lost, but since I had no clue where I was I couldn't even figure out how to navigate via the map.

I learned a lot about Jamaica. Too much, really.

When I bought my map from a gas station attendant, he was seated inside the building, behind a window with thick metal bars, and near a door with the same ornamentation. He didn't really speak English, which is good because we could barely hear each other through the glass anyway; a series of complicated gestures on my part communicated the idea that I wanted a map of the city, for which he happily charged me $6.

Shortly thereafter, I managed to find a working pay phone in an all-night diner so I could call someone and ask for directions.

But yeah, I got to walk and drive around a good chunk of Jamaica. Nice place.

There's a ton of good eateries crammed together on Korea Way (West 32nd Street and Fifth Avenue). Korean barbecue! It's a bit pricey, but worth it.

check out the high line in chelsea! it's a newer park that is like an overpass. it's really cool. i just went there last week. it was hot out, so we weren't really in the mood to hang around for too because there was hardly any shade. but it's really awesome. there's even a spot where you van sit & watch traffic through a huge window. very cool.
