500 Days of Summer Options

I saw it at a really cool little theater in Albany, NY, last weekend. It wasn't bad. I thought some parts were pretty witty, and even though it was a pretty stereotypical story, it was entertaining and made me laugh at several parts. It has a very subtle sense of humor about it that I enjoyed. I think my girlfriend was even embarrassed at how much I laughed at certain parts. The humor kind of reminded me of that of Adventureland: subtle and even kind of nerdy, but good.

That said, there were a few things I didn't really like that much about it:

1. It's told in a non-linear fashion. I really like when writers tell stories non-linearly -- if it plays into the story somehow. But in (500) Days of Summer, it seemed more gimmicky than necessary -- like the writers knew the story was fairly typical and felt a need to "spice it up a bit".
2. It has a weird voice-over narration in some parts that doesn't add anything to the story. Moreover, it's not clear who the narrator is, and omniscient narrators don't usually work well in movies. Plus the narrator is only around for a select few parts of the film, so when he does talk, the effect is jarring, since it pulls you out of the story.

I'm watching it this Saturday, and I'm so psyched!! I've been wanting to watch this movie since I saw the trailer a couple of months ago, and three of my friends who have watched it all loved it. And come on, you can't go wrong with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. You just can't.

I still haven't seen Adventureland. I still want to (despite my lack of affection (if you can call it that) for Kristen Stewart). I'm going to keep your points in mind when I watch this because I tend to like non-linear movie plots, too. I'm not really sure about narrators. I guess I'll just have to see.

I didn't expect this movie to make me laugh so much. I guess I was expecting something a little more serious, but I still enjoyed it. I can't decide if I like the narrator or not. I thought he was kind of unnecessary but at the same time, I felt he gave it a certain effect.

i cried when he found out Summer was getting married. /lame

I loved it. I loved it so so much. The Enchanted-esque scene made me so incredibly happy (I wish my life was like that, with people singing and dancing all of a sudden on the streets :D). I do have to agree about the whole non-linear thing though; it was a little bit confusing at first, having to remember what actually happened first and what parts of the movie occurred after the break-up.

Yeah, it was a LOT funnier than I expected! It was ten billion times better than that shit of a movie Funny People I watched a couple of days ago, that's for sure.

I tried to keep Michael's criticism in mind while I was watching the movie, but I honestly did not notice the narrating so much except for at the beginning... which I guess means it didn't bug me haha.

I thought the narrating was cute. It gave it even more of an off-beat type of flavor...if that made any sense. It was an absolutely adorable movie though. I loved the "non-linear" storyline to it. And it was seriously funny. I didn't think i'd laugh this much but it was seriously funny.

it really hits home... tom reminds me of my boyfriend and summer's views on love remind me of my own fears and insecurities.

The narrating was kind of cheesy, imo. I guess because that "voice" reminds me of something I'd heard in some fairytale-like movie. It wasn't too distracting though. Look at the movie "UP" - actions speak louder than words. There wasn't any narration in the flashbacks from "UP", but there was so much emotion in it.


The fact that the story was not told in chronological order was pretty distracting. It's like, you had to remember what day/number it was when Summer said she just wanted to be friends, at the diner

However, I really liked the subtlety of the jokes and the plot. DEFINITELY a slice-of-life kind of movie. Also, it didn't have a predictable ending, which made it more interesting.
