I have always just gotten my external hard drive, deleted my current backup and then added a folder for videos, documents, pictures, music and so forth. I would like to do it with a program though instead. What do you suggest?

I throw it in reverse, check the mirrors, take a glance over my shoulder, then lightly tap the throttle.

Prior to Mac OS X 10.5, I used a tool called Super Duper! to completely clone my hard drive onto an external drive, but I never had more than one backup.
Now I just use Time Machine. |

http://www.symantec.com/business/products/...lyid=backupexec Or http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s...t_03july14.mspx Is there a program like that, but freeware? And i believe vista still has a backup utility but now it sucks. And it doesnt just transfer files, it saves it as some fancy thing. I think I would like to use a program for this but I am replacing my computer so I need to put all my files on my hard drive and I think i know how to backup my mozilla firefox bookmarks. Is there a program that would allow me to basically transfer my personal folder(joseph) to my exernal hard drive because I just want totransfer documents music video and pictures. I dont need to clone my C:/ drive.tanks. |

I dont need to clone my C:/ drive.tanks. Yeah. It's called "Click-N-Drag", and the best part is, it's free! Here's how to make it work:

I'm going to call you out on there not being a third step. You see, during step two you gave two lines of instruction. You used a comma followed by an and, indicating a compound sentence which could be broken up into two simpler sentences, leading ME TO BELIEVE that step three was secretly included in step two. Myth busted. |

It aint xp foo. In vista, the documents folder only contains documents. I guess Ill just have to do it all manually then.

Wouldn't it have been easier to idk, use Mipadi's steps times two or three for the other main folders you needed instead of waiting all this time for responses in this thread?

If you weren't using a neutered operating system, you could've used Time Machine or rsync to back up, and you'd be done by now. Instead, you'll just have to do as serotonin suggested, and drag Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos to your hard drive. But you can still do it in one swell foop by going to C:\Users\Dumbuser\ and drag those folders all at once. Fool. Or you could waste a few hours by alternately posting in this thread and looking for a backup utility. |

hehe...k.
Im not sure if dragging C:\Users\Joseph would work. Because the folder inside would probably be shortcuts right? Ive always opened the folders first, because I thought dragging would move them, not copy them. |

negative broseph I don't have fancy words or anything but when you drag and drop to an external / flash drive, etc, it copies them.

I dont need to clone my C:/ drive.tanks. It saves it as a backup file. It's essencially a giant compressed file to save space. It works the same exact way. http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...UP-Program.html |

Ive always opened the folders first, because I thought dragging would move them, not copy them. Well, if you have shortcuts, then I don't think the actual files will be copied -- so if you have shortcuts to places outside of your Users folder, they will be broken. But "moving" from one drive to another always copies, you can't "move" across drives. |

you don't really want to backup files anyway... sounds like you want this:
