This layout is based off of this tutorial.
All I did was follow the steps and change some of the steps up a bit to see what I could do with the tutorial and BANG! I had this layout.

I know that there is one spot on the top-right hand corner that I need to fix but I'm not going to because this is only a test layout to see what you guys/gals think. I'm going to make my own similar to this but not with any of the same colors. I'll start working on it once I finish this one's coding.

Preview.

Screenshot:

Is there anything you guys/gals don't like that I should change for my next layout?

NOTE: I'M STILL WORKING ON THE CODING SO IGNORE THE COLORS OF THE CONTENT HEADERS, TEXT, ETC.

It's actually not bad. I think it would look better without all the extra little swirly things. The one in the top left corner is good, but other other ones could go IMO. Also, I'm not really feeling the font and color of your site's name. Something swirlier and possibly a tan color might look good.

Okay, I'll keep that in mind while I make my new site layout.

I agree with Gabi. I also don't like the HUGE navigation. Otherwise, it's pretty good. thumbsup.gif

Okay, I'm going to use a whole different set of colors so you wont have to worry about that in my next layout.

I agree. The brushes look a bit low in quality as well. But the set-up's nice.

How would I go about making them high quality?

scroll bars are the devil! and all the headers look like poorly placed advertisements. i think it might be the color & size of them.

Okay, so should I make them bigger or smaller? Should I choose a different blue or what? Please explain.

Yes, you need to change your coding. Before you make your site live, you really shouldn't have position:absolute anywhere in the code. And it's also bad that the whole website is one image. And none of the boxes are aligned either. Just make the bottom right box line up. But it's good I guess. I think the tutorial one looks better. But it's good. O and learn how to make it center already! It's not hard, and it looks terrible when it's not. Its only center on your computer/screen resolution.

I'm glad you took my advice and tried to mimic another site. But unless you want to look bad, I would make your own design.

O and you didn't do what they did with the text on the header, and that text kinda pulls the whole thing together.

Okay, I'll look up how to make layouts centered tonight. I think this looks good without it being centered.

I'm going to with my next layout.
1 question: How different does it have to be from this tutorial layout to be considered my own design.

Wow Joseph. Honestly, you're not helping at all. You're being really mean. Not all layouts have to be centered. I'm not sure why you're always insisting on that. There are tons of layouts that look good aligned on the left or right. And at your last comment: really? I don't know what to say to this anymore.

No, I'm not saying to not post in the threads she makes, but just be more helpful. Because she won't get any better if we're just being mean.

jcp, grow up.

Erin, the layout is nice but the smaller brushes on the sides are too much, it would look better if there weren't so many bunched together. As for the font, you can go with either a basic serif font like "Times New Roman" or like Gabi said, a swirlier font.

Good job though, even if it's from a tutorial.

Okay. I still don't understand how different my next layout has to be from this one. Like would I just have to change some colors or would I have to completely change it, border, content areas & all?

Um...different would be more than changing colors, it has to also be the whole thing. I'd give an example but I'm about to go to bed, I might make one real fast and show you tomorrow?

Okay, here's an example. I didn't follow the tutorial and only looked at the finished product. But it does help to follow the tutorial at first, and afterward if you like the style then just wing it and use what you really liked from the tutorial.
