What about the Asian stereotype of asians having small mouths? I, for one, believe that many asians actually possess this trait. laugh.gif

don't asian countries score really well in math in general? _unsure.gif i mean yeah i know it's a stereotype and not all asians are good at math. if asians DO test better in math though, then i don't see how the stereotype "comes from ignorance".
i was in a math club and this is what my group looked like

all asians definitely aren't smart, this myth can be disregarded after about 10 minutes on cb.

LOL fact.

So in my Psychology class I'm doing a project on Asian Stereotypes.
Where did these stereotypes begin?
Like:
1 Where did the sterotype of Asians being horrible drivers come from?
2 Where did the whole "Asians are excellent in math" come from?
3 All asians are smart?
etc etc etc.

& how could I, if it were possible, go back into the past & change these?
Help me out please?

2 & 3. No! i know some asinas thta arent that smart ( we dont try, its the lazyness!) Ya I can be smart i guess but then again doesnt this go for all races?? The other raaces are just lazy and dont try haard like the Asain stereotypes. LIke someone else, hes in 8th grade esl and he sleeps in class and hes chinese and another one in my class that copies off my friend. Asains dont have 2 be smart

^ If I'm gonna go by Malcolm Gladwell (and I will), generally, Asians excel at math because of the cultural differences between Asians and non-Asians that determine work ethic. I won't go into the gory details, but Asian culture encourages constant practice and determination to follow through with a task - two things that are factors in math performance.

It's why math scores are the highest in places like South Korea and Hong Kong, and also why these countries go to school for longer stretches over the months (North America has 3+ months of breaks while Asian countries have significantly less), and why they go to school longer on a regular basis (10+ hours a day, 6 days a week).

So, I mean, I hate to say it, but the assertion that "other raaces are just lazy and dont try haard like the Asain stereotypes" is mostly true. It could be worded better because that's not to say that working hard and consistently is necessarily a good thing, and that non-Asians aren't good at other things, but the general idea is true.

I'm not sure if it's just a stereotype anymore.
But the reason why lots and lots of Asians are good at maths is because Asian parents are more concerned about marks than other things -.- and us Asian kids were brought up to try to live up to their expectations.
