I'm trying to use the custom shape tool [the heart shape specifically], but every time I use it the shape gets filled in with a color, I don't want it to be filled in I want it to give me the outline of the shape. Any one know which settings to change to do this ?

Oh that's easy. Select your Custom Tool Shape (U), select your shape, go to the top and click on the drop-down menu next to where it says "Style" and select first box in the last row. It should give you the outline of your shape. Screenshot below.
