I can't really see Twitter as anything more than a gimmicky novelty.

It really only seems to fill two niches:
  1. As a way for people to let others constantly know of their statuses.
  2. As a form of "microblogging", in which people post their personal thoughts (similar to how most people use Facebook statuses).
#1 is clearly narcissism in its purest form. Most people's lives -- including my own -- are so boring that I'd be embarrassed to post a constant stream of updates to the web.

#2 is a bit more interesting. As as avid blogger myself, I see great power in being able to publish your thoughts. At times I feel like a bit of a narcissist for keeping a blog, but if a blog is entertaining, then it's fun for other people to read, and not really narcissistic. The problem with Twitter, though, is that there's a limit to the length of these so-called "microblogs" -- 140 characters, if memory serves. Unless you're writing haiku, it's pretty damn hard to say anything really interesting in 140 characters or less, so I don't really see Twitter as an engaging blogging platform -- and in that sense, it is kind of narcissistic. (Plus, you can't respond unless you, too, have a Twitter account.)

But maybe I'm just too old for this shit.

yeah for real, i agree. i don't think anyone cares to know my status all the time. i don't care to know anyone elses status really. i don't even understand the concept of status messages.

if people wanna use it like a blog i think they should just get a tumblr or something. that's quick easy blogging but with no character limits or things like that.

I use it all the time. Mostly twitterfox at home, text messages during the day.

I'm having deja vu. I think I've typed something like this before.

OHHH found it in the Dear Facebook thread.

^Well, that certainly is a nice feature (updating status via Twitter) BUT, I also love the continuous streaming of TwitterFox. I wish more friends of mine used Twitter. I'd love a massive TwitterFoxing during a Lost episode, for example.

@Michael, I had similar thoughts at first, but I've found that the live feed is pretty nifty (via twitterfox). I know that there are other ways of doing this and that it is borderline chat, but it also updates Facebook as well. I've grown rather fond of Twitter simplicity and I've found that just by having the constant twitterfox stream going, I've learned quite a bit about people (and some celebrities as well, mostly comic book writers).

microblogging on a regular blog just doesn't feel the same. there's more pressure to write a well-thought, properlly edited blog on a regular blogging service than there is to write a two sentence update on twitter. it's not just to satiate our narcissitic needs; sometimes, people just don't want to say much. that doesn't mean that their twitters are useless; in fact, most of the people to whom i've subscribed actually have meaningful updates, whether it's about a sale or coupons for certain stores, or a short review on the latest concert they've attended, or how a certain item has been sold out so don't bother trying, etc. twitter is for the stuff you don't really want to put on a blog, yet you don't want to have to copy and paste to 20 different instant message windows.

I really dislike it when people link it to their facebook. Especially when their tumblr posts go to their twitter, their tweets and their tumblr tweets to go facebook...it's completely excessive.

It's rather pointless. I recently started using mine again after neglecting it for months. I don't how much longer I will keep it up, it's starting to seem like a waste of time updating it with random things that I know most people don't give a shit about.

Meh... found nothing too interesting. It'll die (or die down) in about 3-5 years just like myspace.

Now that you have that set up, you can text updates to twitter. You know, like how you would send a regular text. If you receive a tweet via your phone and you want to reply to it, don't forget to @(username) so they'll get your response.
