I just watched Youtube videos about the Columbine school shooting. I had never heard about it until now... it was on April 20, 1999... I was in kindergarten at the time.

It had descriptions of the killers.. and they reminded me of some people I knew at my school..

If there was a school shooting at my school.. I can imagine it would be this kid (won't say his name..) that knows a lot of information that no one cares about; he is very annoying and a know-it-all, but if you're good at reading people, you will realize that that is the only way that he knows how to try to be friends with people is to ramble on about the stuff he knows; since most people can not read others very well (especially at this age) he has basically 0 friends? :/ wow that sounds tragic. He is horribly picked on--non-stop. Daily he is bombarded with insults and pushes and shoves. I'm shocked that he can take it all; I definitely get the feeling that all the negative energy is building up in him.

I can't imagine anyone else at my school causing a school shooting.. he was the only one that stood out.

Luckily, everyone is very friendly to each other at my school. There is hardly ever any bullying, but since we do virtually NOTHING to get rid of bullying, we have some. We have clear and defined rules, but they are rarely enforced, unless it has something to do with the dress code. That seems to be the most important part.. blink.gif .

There has never been a school shooting at my high school (that I know of) and the school has been here for longer than I can remember. It's basically the only public high school in my entire city.. so I can imagine it's been here as long as the city has.

If there was to be a school shooting at your school, do you think you have a good idea of who would be the one shooting? If so, do you plan on doing anything to prevent it?

A shit ton of people have a horrible time at highschool. Not everyone is going to lash out. We should also be aware of the self-fulfilling prophecy. Don't treat a guy like he's going to shoot up a school. He might just do it.

Also, do you really think it's that easy to profile a school shooter? Just because they get picked on doesn't mean they're going to bring a 09mm Glock with hollow points. Trying to imply that all kids who don't have friends/get picked on are going to be school shooters is stupid logic.

You cannot prevent a school shooting. When shit goes down likely you will be caught off gaurd. CCW may help, but it's better to get the hell out of the building. Nobody can be a Clint Eastwood. Trying to defend your life is very important, but only if you need at the last second. Even if I was carrying I wouldn't try to hunt down the guy. You'd see me be the first one to grab my friends and get the f*ck out. If you have to, jump out of the building. I mean, I'd rather have a broken bone rather than have a bullet go through my spinal cord.

The best way IMO is to pick a campus that is an outdoor campus. Cho Seung Hui managed to kill that many people because the building was sealed off. If you're in an outdoor campus with different buildings, it's a lot more easier to get out of a bad situation. Being aware of your surroundings will help.

However, instead of trying to worry about it, you should be just going on with your lives. The chance of a school shooting is slim and plus, if you weren't a dick to the guy, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

We as Americans need to do something, but banning guns to stop school shootings is asinine. Like drugs, I can buy a an AK variant illegally and still bring it to school. Hell, I can buy a cheap Mosin Nagant for 80 bucks. It's a bolt action, but it's still going to do the job.

-edit
And maybe you should talk to the guy or something instead of observing him and marking him off as a "potential school shooter." Or maybe you're too afraid of people making fun of you too?

-another edit
I really think schools need a better response system. I think having a system of communication can really lower losses and lives. If a school shooting happens, at least one person may die; but you can prevent the death of many more.

Fun fact: Trey Parker and Matt Stone went to and graduated from Columbine Highschool. They were not surprised when they heard of the shooting.

Columbine just scratches the surface. I'm surprised you've never heard of it. I take it you don't listen to Eminem?

Most of what you've heard about Columbine is probably wrong. Harris and Klebold weren't ordinary kids. Harris was a manipulative, megalomaniacal sociopath, and Klebold was deeply depressed. They weren't even really harassed or bullied at school.

i don't think profiling bullies or people who get bullied is going to prevent anything really either. those dudes were messed up, the virigina tech dude was messed up and people knew he was messed up. i think for the most part you have to be genuinely mentally ill to do something like that, not just mad becasue someone pushed you in the hall _unsure.gif

i know it's not the same in every case but at least in my experience, i think a lot of the time when someone is mentally not right, someone has some idea that the person isn't right. something needs to be done with those people, removed from school, helped, something. that's all i can think of in the way of prevention.

not that i think that will even work either necessarily. but i mean in regards to the virgina tech guy, when you have teachers and students saying they were scared to go to class with him...is it not a clue that something serious needs to be done if you're scared of a student in your class? i never understood all that really. all the stuff about how people knew he was messed up.

i agree with this though

"Other students often even egg them on," says Newman, who led a congressionally mandated study on school shootings. "Then they end up with this escalating commitment. It's not a sudden snapping."

The one thing we should gain from these types of scenarios is... respect. Respect others. Or simply, mind your business. Believe it or not, I'm one of those people who blamed all those preppy ass snobs and all those bullies who screwed with those kids.

If you ever mistreated someone and got a beat down for it, blame yourself, you deserved it.

you think that the kids deserved to DIE?

i can understand if you hit someone, they can hit you back. but teasing someone, or hitting them for that matter is not equal to a bullet in the head in return. preppy ass snobby kids or not, that doesn't make it warranted. also there's really no point in blaming the people who get shot when the shooters are mentally ill. that makes no sense at all. did you even read the article michael linked though? because it was basically about how this whole thing has been painted different than it really was, and this whole notion that they were bullied into it is wrong.

but in regards to school shootings in general, respect is irrelevant imo when you have someone shooting random people. respect only matters if they are shooting specific people. i'm sure plenty of people killed in these mass school shootings didn't directly disrespect the shooter themselves.

I was young when that happened

But yeah what otehrs Said, just go on with life and dont worry or label some who might be the "Labeled shooter"
Imo if that ever happened, i would try to find my sister (Tomates, she means the worl to me as a sister) and get the hell out of the school, like jump out a window and run my ass, casue that shooter will prolly be distracted.

i live in a small town. i was in my Government class and we were talking about gun control. A LOT of kids in my class (from jocks to hicks) know a lot about Guns, how they work, and even how they are made (and they are super detailed) But just becasue they know all this info doesn't mean they will come to school and be a mad man. like i wont lie i was worried on how my class knew so much XD
I just think A lot of schools need to be more strict through lockdowns and learn better/more efficeint procedures to keep the students safe

I watched a Michael Moore Doc. about the school shootings, The south park guys were on that too, they had some very good responses to school/gun Violence

I should have been more specific. The kids that had nothing to do with those shooters in the first place, should have not been involved. Also I don't think killing someone for being teased is by any means rational. But strongly believe in defending yourself if you're being mistreated, verbally and even physically if needed.

Haha, I remember the day of the columbine shooting. Our stupid immigrant bus driver turned the bus around back to school because he left a kid behind, and I spent the whole bus ride making fun of that f*cking moron because he was so close to my stop. When we finally got back to the school, the principal was like "wtf are you doing, you're not supposed to come back." Got the whole bus to laugh at him. He told me I was going to jail.

Also there's a lot of unanswered questions about Columbine and of course there's a strong conspiracy theory which aims at the government, claiming that they had foreknowledge of such an imminent attack but they wanted it to happen so it could be used on our rights to own guns.

Well, here's a new brand of school shooting for you. There was an off campus shooting today by one of our professors that killed at least three people.
