I have a new layout, I made it in Photofiltre Studio. Tell me what you think? What I should do to it and what not.

The layout is here

EDITED IT WITH AN ASHLEE SIMPSON PIC.

It still looks really basic and plain. Try adding more textures and brushes or something. Also, a few gradients wouldn't hurt. Maybe even like a gradient for the background of your headers or something. Keep trying.

I don't understand. Gradients are the things that change color right. So you think I should add some of those for my header tags (h1, h2,...), right?

Yeah.

Exactly. You should try GIMP in the meanwhile until you get Photoshop.

It works for me...but, uh...

It looks like...well... pooh.gif. And don't get mad, because you asked for it.
The font at the top is terrible quality, and the background looks like you just put a whole bunch of dot everywhere (horribly). Also, I don't think the colors go too well together, and I agree with the other guys about GIMP.

To be honest, I don't think anyone would use this...

Ok I never really looked at it before and this is whats wrong.
It has a bad color theme. Theres just like a bunch of different pinks. And the dots in the background look awful. There is a random css things and headers and nothing flows. Big borders are awful and they are around the boxes right now. And there is a white space at the top and below the top banner.

I'm going to be honest, but this looks like there wasn't any effort put into it. It looks like you added circle brush strokes in a couple of spots on the background and put the name of the site over it. The columns are basic, and using the font Times New Roman makes it seem too minimal in my opinion. I think you should start using Arial or Tahoma more in layouts, that's just my opinion though.

I did use arial and verdana. I need to see other font types b/c those were the only 2 i used.

It's a layout for my site. No one else is supposed to use it.

The white space is a border on the banner. I got the idea from here.

But see he has a thin border. And it has a frop shadow and stripes. Its not just a random white space. And the white borders on your page arent equal in size.

It looks a bit better now but the image is in low quality. Try saving it in a .PNG format.

Maybe you should take a couple months where you don't make any official, just study tutorials, observe other designs, and practice. To be completely and brutally honest here, your graphics and layouts aren't really improving much. Also, get GIMP like Joseph suggested. It doesn't have the pen tool, but at least you'll have something decent to work with.

Well the image is better but the layout is still pretty basic and plain. The headers don't look much better and the dots are pretty unprofessional. I also suggest you take into consideration to try looking at a bunch of tutorials and you should just get GIMP instead of using photofiltre because honestly, it sucks. When you learn some new stuff, try posting it in the Showcase Booth and we'll tell you if you need to work some more and all. Also, when you post something new, make sure it's not something that you just make official. Let us critique it and then when it's good enough, make it official. Good Luck. thumbsup.gif

This isn't official yet. It's on my OTHER index page so that it doesn't go live. I use that page to create layouts then I make them live.
