250 kb is f*cking small |

alright so i have a graphic that is 1 MB right now and i need to get it down to 250 kb. if this was your task, how would you go about it?
it pisses me off. every time i save it to something under 250kb, the color looks like shit. it makes the saturation and contrast suck. if i go back and kick the saturation up some, then it throws me up over 300 kb. at under 250 with faded colors, it doesn't even look like what i originally did, so it's just a complete waste to require something to be this size wtf. anyway, just what would you save it as if this was your problem? edit: when i open this file back up in photoshop it looks ok. but if i upload it or open it with anything else it looks faded out. |

it's 640x700. i've been saving by going to the "save for web devices" because if i just go to "save as" i can only do it as a jpeg, which ends up being too big even when i adjust the quality to low.

probably to a server, but no where necessarily. it's an assignment and part of the assignment is it be under 250 kb. it's just a trivial requirement for the sake of being trivial. not for any real reason other than the directions say so.

i have a lot of .jpegs saved optimized at 100%, over 1000x900 and still under 250kb. just stick with save for web, jpeg.
if it's a really colorful image, try resizing to 90% or cropping. |

640x700 over 1MB? are you saving this as PNG-24? i'd suggest switching to JPEG, allow for progressive compression, and optimize for 250kb. in photoshop, near the top next to "presets" there's a drop down menu with an option "Optimize to File Size..."
edit: the size also depends on how many bits per channel you're using. if you're saving as a JPEG, with the image open, go to Image > Mode > 8 Bits/Channel. |

I don't notice a difference if I optomize pictures for the web. Of course you're not going to be able to get a super HQ photograph to remain all the best colors, and levels, and be able to save it to the web and keep it under 250kb. Is there are particular type of file that it needs to be? Like a photo, or a rastered image? |

Wow. That is pretty small. Is there a limit on the dimesions? If you make it smaller it will be a smaller file size.
