I wasn't too stunned when seeing laptop prices drop like bricks this year except when I saw this machine appear like magic on best buy's shelves this month:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...;ci_sku=9173262

While I realize this computer doesn't have the highest resolution (1366 x 768), it's a ridiculous bargain for 900.00 dollars. A laptop with as much juice as this one would have cost 1700-2000 dollars only two months ago.

For a laptop its great but id rather make my own desktop with that money.
But I agree that laptop prices have plummeted!

Not really... for that price I was expecting a 17" not 15".

Of course I'm basing this off of the economic issue at hand. I've seen similar stats on 17" Laptops for even cheaper price ($600-$760-ish)

I agree, I would much rather have a desktop. I have no need for a laptop.

I could care less about screen size. It's a laptop. I want it to be portable. 15"-15.6" is a good compromise between mobility and size. However, speaking of the screen. It's only a WXGA(1366 x 768). I guess it will do. I'd really like full 1080p, but at the 900 dollar price point I can't complain.

Anyway, it's not the screen I'm talking about. Look at the video card, mobile NV9800. It's unheard of to find a laptop with a dedicated graphics card like that under 1500 dollars.

My ultimate goal is to make my dream computer (working on it) and then just buy a netbook for when I travel.

You're right; I might as well just purchase a net-book for my portable notebook needs. I don't do anything hard core on my laptop, however if you're looking for a cheap laptop that you cannot beat into submission then this one takes the cake. I would have loved this thing during college.

Haha, good luck! I'm sure it will only cost a few grand by the time you justify purchasing it.

It was an all-around machine.. if that makes any sense. But it's Apple.. it was really like a $4,000 computer if built... but of course you can't build a damn Mac, instead you'd have to buy a built one from Mac -.-

I hear ya. I don't mind the screen size on this laptop.. but I wish the price was lower, specifically because I can find 17" screens for a little cheaper.

Yeah, but I know for a fact they don't come with the processing power that this one has.

Possibly.. I went to Office Depot the other day for a new printer (finally went with laser) and I saw some awesome SONY and HP laptops for great prices.

I compared pricing with dell:

My Components at $979.00:
  • Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6600 (2.20GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
  • 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz
  • Size: 320GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
  • 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 with Belkin HDMI Cable - 6ft
  • 8X Slot Load CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
  • Intel®WiFi Link 5100 802.11agn Half Mini-Card
  • 56 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
  • High Definition Audio 2.0
  • Standard Keyboard (included in the price)
  • Glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1440x900) w/ 2.0M pixel Camera
The processor isn't even remotely as good. The FSB is only 800mhz while the FSB on laptop I give in the link has 1066Mhz. The video card pales in comparison to the 9800 as the 3650 come out while ATI was still pissing in bed. It only has a standard keyboard. The RAM is clocked at a slower speed as well.

lol I'm gonna attempt to build it again..

Alright so.. something changed about it. I remember the case being black and silver. And ya, the prices look like they've changed drastically.

At the time that it was in the 30k range, it was about 9-10 months ago.
