To those of you that have your own apartment....how is it and what are some of the struggles that you have had to and still do deal with?

Not so much of a struggle... but the electricity bill sometimes doesn't seem right. A couple months ago my bill hit $184 (rounded) and that didn't make sense at all. Especially since Florida at the moment has cool weather, we don't touch the A/C.

Well, I still don't have a couch.
Seriously though, I haven't had any real "struggles". Everything works fairly well, and the landlord is quick to make repairs. I live in a quiet area, too, so I don't have any noise problems. Only real issue is location, which is something that's important to keep in mind. I live several miles from the town center, so it can be annoying to go out and do things, or just hang out with other people. Also, I'm not within walking distance of a bar, so when my roommates and I go out for beers, one of us always has to take it easy so we can drive home safely. |

Yeah like i know that the location is right next to the subway and lightrail systems, and cabs are always a quick call away so that is not a problem. I am just ready to have something on my own ya know. I am at the point where the aunt is starting to get to me.

i don't guess this really falls under "struggle", but more of a complaint. what really drives me up the wall about apartments is feeling like the monthly payment is just going down the drain. every month i would feel like "well there goes 700 dollars i'll never see again". it's not such a big deal if it's just a place to live for a while, but if you're going to be paying something on a long term basis it sucks that you're not paying to own anything ya know.

Yeah true. I plan on trying to get an apartment with one of my buddies. I want to have it for a while maybe until I am 25 - 28 before I get my own house.

Well make sure you have no less than 6 paycheck stubs because they're gonna wanna know your income history, make sure your credit is good, and make sure you have double sometimes triple the amount of the first bill (if monthly rent is 400, make sure you have $1200 to put down) |

Hell yeah, I'm subscribing to this thread. I'm moving to an apartment first while I look around for other places to live, so I'm kinda in the same boat as you, mang.
I'm expecting all kinds of trouble, but from what I hear, it's not all that bad. |
