Black History Month

There was a Martin Luther King observance today, held in one of Saddam's old palaces. I stood in the crowd, amidst a swarm of White people, while another White person uncomfortably spoke about the Civil Rights movement. The whole thing made me feel uneasy. I love being Black, I'm proud to be a young Black man and I'm proud of those who have fought courageously for equality. But there's something about Black History Month and this forced recognition of the Black figures of history that doesn't sit right with me.

Am I buggin'?

MAKE BLACK HISTORY EVERY DAY, I DON'T NEED A MONF


it would be nice if people would just appreciate without having to be told, eh.

Exactly. Being singled out can often cause way too much (unnecessary) trouble.

yeah i find things like that very awkward. sorta like being in class when we discuss anything having to do with slavery or the civil rights movement, i feel like every white kid around me is all the sudden taking note of me sitting there mellow.gif


i feel the same though lots of times about the mandatory celebration we have to have. i don't know that i feel we should have to force people to celebrate or learn about black history. just like i don't get why we can't learn black history 12 months of the year like we do white history whistling.gif i've yet to be in a history class though that we dedicated more than an awkward week to learning about slavery and such. sorta like how i've never really been in a world history class that wasn't focused in european history and ignored africa, china, south america, ect, you know, every where non white.

The catch-22 of all this is being aware of this and pointing it out. If you make this known, no matter how well you prove your point, you're an 'angry Black man who is ungrateful.' If you stay silent, you're doing yourself and what you represent a major injustice.

edit// Malcolm X day would involve that hood shit. And I'm not talking about stick up kids and small time drug dealers, nah. I'm talking about Carbon 15s, Molotov Cocktails and some of that gutter shit.

I just went to this MLK Day celebration and they had kids read excepts from essays they wrote about the man and his legacy and I couldn't help but think "COME ON!" f*cking exceptionalism. MLK is not the be all end all of the Civil Rights movement. Kids don't learn anything interesting or, you know, real. If I was a history teacher, man... my students would be so radicalized.

With that said, Black history is American history and should not be singled out.

That's what I'm getting at. Like you said, "why we can't learn black history 12 months of the year like we do white history?" Black history needs to be taught concurrently with American history.

Agreed. I sometimes look at people who celebrate black history month and I am like wtf...it should be black history everyday...Just because it is the month, that makes you more black for 28 days?!

That's true too. All minority histories need to be taught concurrently with the rest of American history.
