So i straighten my hair a lot and its also kinda thin and i notice that it seems to get a bunch of split ends pretty quickly even after i get a trim. So is there a good hair shampoo or some kind of heat protector that i can use to decrease the amount of splits?

I use Pantene Protecting Proteger - Damage Defender Spray.

You spray it into your hair before you style it with heat products such as straightener, curler, blow dryer, etc. It works pretty well and it's around $4.

Tresemme also makes heat protectors. Sometimes, when I feel that my hair is getting really dry, I do a hot oil mask and it gets really hydrated.

The best thing that I have tried lately is using hot oil treatments. It smooths the hair down and generally makes it softer, more manageable, and I guess shinier. My hair is slightly wavy (even though I am Chinese), and thus can get frizzy. Some directions say to use it after shampooing; if it makes your hair oilier, I guess try it before washing your hair (I tried this, and it worked fine).

edit: and yeah. I just realized that someone already mentioned hot oil. =P I guess my only other tip is to make sure the water you heat the hot oil container in is warm/hot enough.

heat is pretty damaging to hair. if possible, try to straighten less. a good diet always helps. i heard aloe was good for hair, along with other things. don't ever straighten when your hair is wet.

I'm currently using an olive oil-aloe shampoo (don't worry, it doesn't smell like either one of those) and I like it so far. I have a really bad problem with dandruff and I've already started to see good results. Olive oil is a fantastic moisturizer/conditioner (I'd recommend using that as an oil treatment, too) and aloe is supposed to soothe irritation, itching, etc. I've also used a tea tree oil shampoo but I think it cleaned my hair a little too well and I didn't like how it felt after. Vitamin E is another thing that's supposed to be good. I used to squeeze the vitamin E gel caps and use that to directly moisturize my hair.

I also tend to stay away from blow drying my hair (which is easy since my hair is short). It also feels better than blow drying, less stiff.

oh wow i might need it. i have to wash my hair everyday with shampoo or my hair gets somewhat oily/flaky. i used to love aloe a lot, as much as i loved aloe juice. i used to love tea tree oil but i've always hated the way it smelled.

i don't like the way any oil treatment feels on my hair. have you tried mayonaise hair mask yet? i would HATE the stench afterwards.

Yeah, I have, actually. The smell is disgusting but it does work. Olive oil isn't nearly as olfactorily offensive as mayo.

maybe made it super dry? like when i wash my face with certain cleansers that end up stripping out all the oils, my body overreacts and forms more oil.

Yeah, it's like what Sandy said. Like when your hair is squeaky squeaky clean. But then because I'm black and black hair produces oil slower than Caucasian/Asian hair, it leaves it super dry even though I condition and moisturize after.

Bump

Thick, coarse hair. I've had Biolage (sp?) balm something or rather and some CHI silk product recommended. I dye my hair about every other month. For some reason, this year has been horrible for my hair. I'm not sure if it's because it has been more humid or what.

I know that I can google for products and such, but I'm really looking for opinions based on experiences, beyond that which I see in product comment sections.

i bought one of those hair straightners that uses steam, which puts a lot less stress on my hair. maybe you can invest in one of those?

I use a deep conditioner from John Fredia and a leave in cream from Herbal Essence.

none of your frizzness
hello hydration
Rehydrate Intensive Deep Conditioner
Heat Defeat Protective Styling Spray

Those might help? And CHI hair irons are awesome, mine doesn't damage my hair as much as my conair one did.

You guys are so awesome, thank you for responding!

A friend of mine has her Beauty/Cosmetology license and took me over to Beauty Alliance (you have to have your license to purchase there) and had me buy the following for dirt cheap:

http://www.amazon.com/Biolage-Matrix-Ultra...s/dp/B0007CXXJQ

It smells wonderful, I can tell you that. Her hair looks amazing and that is what she uses so hopefully I'll have at least a percentage of her success.

I've thought about a steam based straightener. I use mine daily and I'm sure that's not helping my situation. I just bought a GPS, so that purchase will have to wait a month or so. haha

I've used to Biolage shampoos (my mom has them) and I'm not a huge fan. It might just be the type of hair that it is made for. My hair has pretty much no volume, but it isn't thin. The only thing I do is add mousse sometimes when I blow dry my hair, which shows when I neglect to get my hair trimmed for quite a few months.

i have thin hair.

i used Nexxus conditioner to revive my damaged hair (went from curl perm to straight perm). not sure if it'd work on your hair, but i loved the results i saw. my hair is smooth after every use. nexxus has a 'Hydra Sleek Silken Smoothing Conditioner' you might want to test out in the future.

Slate's sister site Double X did a review for dry shampoo. this option may be convenient for you, so that you wouldn't have to wash as frequently (if you do).

i've never read up if purifying shampoos actually did anything, but they're supposed to get rid of all the gunk from hair products build up that shampoo can't rid of. i use Halo's Purify Shampoo once a week or so.

lol @ herbal essence. if you can now buy higher end hair products at your local grocery store, i would suggest you stay away from that trash. the only thing it's good for is the smell.
