Have you ever purchased something that was "name brand" or expensive only to realize later that it was utter crap?
I bought an Urban Decay essentials kit and it came with their "cult favorite" Midnight Cowboy eyeshadow. It looked very pretty in the package. A kinda pink based neutral champagne/beige. Opened it up and tested it on my hand. GLITTER GALORE! Not shimmer. Not micro glitter. CONFETTI countable chunks of glitter. And by itself, Urban Decay charges $16 dollars for it. Totally not worth it when you can get preteen glittery makeup for 99 cents. |

I don't buy things because they are name brand. You can find a lot of good deals and high quality things for a lower price. That's why I like to buy things in a store and not online. (Unless I've seen the product in a store first)

Wow the same thing happened to me, except that the lid to the stuff wouldn't open easy. But when I did get it open it went everywhere. It looked like a god damn fairy came into my room and farted out glitter.
I was so pissed. lol |

Yeah Urban Decay is known for its extreme sparkliness... You didn't get to test it in the store?
My first concealer was this little pot from LORAC, and it made me break out more. |

brands > everything.
i'll pay $50 for a plain white tee at say Urban Outfitters over a $5 plain white tee at Wal-Mart, even though they still look alike. |

brands > everything. i'll pay $50 for a plain white tee at say Urban Outfitters over a $5 plaint white tee at Wal-Mart, even though they still look alike. I'd do the same thing too, only because you know that $5 shirt is going to rip the second time you bought it. Now that I think of it, I don't know if I have ever bought clothes from Wal-Mart... |

Time to do a return! You got it at Sephora, right?
That's hardly ever happened to me (especially in terms of makeup), because I always do extensive research before I go out to buy anything. I never buy anything impulsively. I'll spend hours researching on forums, product review sites, YouTube, etc before I actually buy it. I went to the NARS counter the other day, fully prepared to buy something, and I knew more about the products than the lady at the counter did. I did get a free full-sized sample of Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner in the colour Bunny Hop and it was worthless. I liked the texture but it didn't show up at all. Retailed for $18 too! So glad I didn't buy it. |

i'm gonna edit upon that and go with quality > everything. +1brands supposed to imply quality, but not always :( and sometimes when you're on a budget, if the difference in quality between the $5 and $50 shirt are not that significant, you'd best bet I'd go for the $5 shirt (of course, that's just an extreme example) |

Bandcamp + Walmart clothes = good idea i remember i ruined a good pair of shorts and a volcom tank top because of band camp ![]() so if your going to rough it and potentially get dirty or clothes torn then walmart is the way to go |

I still need to find the perfect white T-shirt, and I tell myself that I'm willing to pay any amount for the absolute PERFECT one, yet when I'm in the store, I find it so hard to pay over $20 for a white T. Quality is one thing, but if the garment itself is sort of mainstream and not unique, paying a lot may sometimes be unjustified.
But damn paying $16 for glitter is not justified, since most of makeup's costs come from the pigment itself and not filler glitter. Fall-out must be insane. |

^Here's the thing though. The kit came with an oversized bottle of UDPP and the eyeshadow Asphyxia, both of which I love love love. There is no way I can go back to Sephora to return 1/3 of the kit. And yes, the fallout is so bad. Without UDPP, I swatched it on my hand and after I moved around a little bit, there was glitter on my other hand, my laptop, my face, my jeans... everywhere.
And for the perfect white tee shirt, if the shirt is 100% cotton, the quality can't stray much from each other. Cotton is relatively cheap so just because it's 5 dollars, doesn't mean it'll rip. I've bought tees that cost 20 dollars and they pilled like crazy. I've also had cheaps I got for 10 dollars or even less and they still are buttery soft. I say American Apparel (I love how their cotton feels) or Hanes. I love Hanes. So traditional and their fabric conforms to such a lovely comfy feel. |

I have 3 different urban decay eyeshadows that are super shimmery but the 50 bucks for 3 eyeshadows was like wtf. I just bought a palette from CVS that has 7 colors and the palette was only like 6 bucks. It works really really well which was really suprising.

Quality is one thing, but if the garment itself is sort of mainstream and not unique, paying a lot may sometimes be unjustified. I got my perfect white tee at Tenth & Proper in Vancouver. Their house label is properTy (made by the manufacturers for Prada and Jil Sander!) It is super soft. It is the basic round necked white tee but I do believe they have v-necks as well. I believe they retail for $90 but I got mine for $39 on sale. The tees beat even James Perse IMO; they retain their shape so well. The store is currently on sale and they have some unique, well tailored pieces :) |

Everyone can tell if you paid money for it and didnt find it at thriftstore even if they look exactly the same. But your lucky enough to be able to afford it. |

You're buying the BRAND not the item. That finally hit me a long time ago. I paid $90 for some jordans and they ended up getting fcuk up & i paid $98 for a Luxirie jacket w/ small logo on the front and it wasn't worth it and ended up selling it. Im stupid w/ money "/.

this topic reminded me of this blog post by ricebunny a while back. just took me a while to find it 'cause i forgot who wrote it. although i may not agree with everything she says, she's on point about the quality/price ratio and does a good job explaining her reasons for believing that higher price doesn't necessarily ensure quality.
