'k, so my brother here is being a total jerk and playing music (albeit quietly) behind me. I have an exam next week. Thing is, I simply cannot concentrate with ANY AMOUNT OF ANY MUSIC in the background, so it's really pissing me off. I don't want to tell him to shut up because it would only create problems in the near future with him thinking I have bad attitude, but he was the one who flew into a rage last night when I asked him a simple question while he was studying, but that's besides the point.
So I plugged in some earphones, the noise-canceling kind, and it's not enough. I thought that it would be brilliant if someone could someone produce the sound of nothingness. I guess white noise is as close as you can get. I don't mind noise so much as long as it's not annoying or distracting. And I found this: http://www.simplynoise.com/ It's cool, you can choose between white noise, pink noise, or brown/red noise. I have no idea what pink or brown/red noise is, but they're all nice. Really is helping me concentrate right now, blocking out my brother listening to Usher and instead I'm listening to pure nothingness. try it if you're having trouble. |

Yeah brown/red noise reminds me of the ocean a little bit. But I'm not looking to be relaxed, so I'm using pink noise right now. White noise is a little piercing to the ear.

I usually get really freaked out when I hear/see white noise (horror movie, anyone?), but these are actually really cool. I think my favourite is the pink noise. The white one is too sharp, and brown/red one sounds too much like the ocean to me.

This would have been really helpful. A group of people near me while I was trying to study was annoying the crap out of me.

Im playing around with the volume and stuff and i didnt realize that my mom was trying to grab my attention. I think i will bookmark this, thanks gigi ![]() |

I am currently in a computer lab full of nerdy Asian boys communicating loudly to each other on DOTA strategies in their foreign languages (which, btw, is a very pathetic way to spend one's free time not studying on a Saturday). I hope to god this helps.
Edit: Am I going crazy, or do their voices seem even louder now? f*ck. |

I find it works better if I use noise-canceling headphones *shrug* I literally cannot hear anything at all...the others that I study with think I'm crazy and weird for listening to creepy pink noise, but hey, whatever works.
I'm actually okay if there's like a constant murmuring in the background. I only really get distracted if there's a single loud conversation going on or if my brother's watching Top Gear or something. |

I'm using my Zune headphones right now, which are supposed to be noise-canceling. The DOTA-playing people are speaking very loudly, with a few random cheers/shrieks every once in a while haha, which distracts me every few minutes... but I think it should be okay now. I think it took some time to get used to listening to the noise instead of complete silence.

^ Haha that's good then. Now when I listen to the noise, it's kinda like the noise replaces silence - i.e. you get used to it so it just becomes the regular background buzz. Yeah random cheers/shrieks aren't good for me...why the hell are they in the lab if they're just going to discuss DOTA? Jackasses.

They're playing it. And it's always either the fobby Koreans or fobby Chinese.
![]() I don't understand boys. Seriously, who in their right mind goes to a school library during their free time to not study??! |
