Currently, I'm reading...

The Challenge of Fundamentalism: Politcal Islam and the New World Disorder by Bassam Tibi

It's an eye opener and I'm only halfway through the book.

If you haven't read it yet, you should read The Ayatollah Begs to Differ by Hooman Majd. They sound similarly themed and I've enjoyed Majd's book so far.

I could always google it, but I'd rather ask someone who's read it; what's it about?

It's kind of a travelogue but from the point of view of an native Iranian (the author was born in Iran, but spent a lot of time in the West because his parents were diplomats but travels back and forth between Iran). During the course of the book he basically explains Iranian culture and the Iranian mindset to a Western audience.

I know absolutely nothing about Iran, other than they're a perceived threat, so I'll check that out.

The book I'm currently reading explains the differences between Islamic beliefs and fundamentalism. It goes into detail in explaining the motives of extremists and terrorists organization, and what they're trying to achieve politically. He clearly defends his faith and proves how Islam and fundamentalism do not go hand-in-hand. It's very informative and it's allowing me to understand Iraq's culture a hell of a lot better.
