I'd say if you're going for a more creative career (graphic designer, illustrator, etc) then there's nothing wrong with it. When I was applying for a print/web design internship, I should've done that...

er, good question.

but let's say i was applying for a basic office job (machines and papers and such), would it be alright for me to do something simple like one of those?

Some of them are okay. Some of them are a bit over the top. The more minimalist ones might be usable.

Part of the problem with a bunch of them is that they waste a lot of space. Unless you're well-experienced (i.e., middle-aged), you basically get one page for a résumé. Not one page front-and-back -- one page, period. No one's going to read a second page.

I don't have a lot of stuff on my own personal résumé, but it barely fits on one page as it is, and I waste very little space.
