I listened to Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" on the way to school this morning. I haven't heard that song in at least a few months. While listening to it, I realized that the song is almost timely, since September just ended a week ago today. But then I thought about how annoying this time of the year must be for Billy Joe Armstrong. Imagine yourself as Billy Joe on October 1st. Probably at least a dozen people -- maybe more -- will tell you, "Dude, just so you know -- September ended!" and laugh as though they're the first and only person to ever point that out to you. That's why you should never write a song with a title like "Wake Me Up When September Ends".
But more power to Billy Joe. No matter how annoying the aftermath may be, that song was a hit, and he's laughing all the way to the bank. In fact, selling out may have been the smartest thing Billy Joe ever did. Sure, it made him a punk rock pariah, and meant that other musicians could never, ever take him seriously again, but he made a pile of money. And money can buy dignity...right? |

I don't hate any member of Green Day for selling out.
If I were in a band I'd do my own thing for a while until I got the big money flashed in front of me. f**k yeah I'll sing a few lame songs you wrote for millions of dollars!! What? You want me to start a lame new trend? I can do that for a few more million. I just wish that rather than COMPLETELY selling out they would have still done some old school style shit. I love old Green Day. But, people change and maybe they are into what they play now. Who knows. |

I'll confess, the song is actually quite pretty. hehe
I've never thought much of Green Day, so I can't say that I'm disappointed or surprised by the "sell out." I always considered them half assed punk wannabes anyway. :p I'm not even sure what "selling out" means these days. I think that the majority of "successful" musicians have songs that are highly manufactured anyway. |

I never really considered them "sell outs", although I never really took them seriously. I'm sure that there were some fans who thought they sold out with Dookie.

Yeah, I never thought of them as sell outs either. But I LOVE Dookie!! Or... at least that Basket Case song.
You know what really bugs me, though? How people use that Green Day song for graduation. Yes, it's about the time of your life, but the song is called Good Riddance for goodness sakes! Gawd. |

The music video was kind of epic and a tale of our daily life...
I hope not that Obama or McCain could bring back "The Draft" . |

It got sooooooooo overplayed.
All the songs that I hadn't heard in a mercifully long time keep coming on today. Like this one and Soulja Boy. And James Blunt. |
