Unresolved Plot Elements In 'Brisingr'
Below is a brief list of some plot details that were announced to be in Book 3 Of the Inheritance Trilogy, (now Inheritance Cycle) but as it was split into two books, appear to not have been included in Brisingr. Paolini has mentioned the following information in various interviews:

In the third (now fourth) book, the Varden's attitude towards Nasuada's position as leader of the Varden might change.
In the third (now fourth) book it will be revealed if Saphira ever finds a mate.
More of Ajihad's background (other than the nomadic tribes) may be revealed.
Eragon has yet to find the Rock of Kuthian or the Vault of Souls and speak his name, as instructed by the werecat Solembum.
Eragon may leave Alagaesia forever from Angela's prediction.
The werecats will be expanded upon.
The words of power Brom told Eragon before he died and what they meant will be revealed.

It doesn't talk about Eragon and Arya though.


Why would Eragon leave? HE MUST STAY.
You know, if Eragon doesn't die in book four or something, I'm going to be more depressed seeing as how paolini is able to continue to write about him if he's alive, but won't.

And yes! He can totally further the storyline. Once Galbatorix is pwned, then he can pick a worthy ruler, and in time maybe someone will try and throw things off scale again. Or they find the One Ring to rule them all. Oh wait, already happened.
