For personal sites those prices aren't bad, because most people just making a blog or a myspace aren't gonna shell out a lot of money to have a layout done. Plus there are so many free layouts out there that if someone wants a site done that badly, they more often than not will put the time into looking around for layout code before they go paying someone to do it. If there's not much invested in the site, there's no reason to put money into it, especially if they're already paying for hosting. So if you can get people to pay you that for a personal site (especially if you haven't been doing it for very long and don't have any professional references) then you're doing really well.
Designing for a business, often a lot more is expected out of you. If I do a small design/redesign for a company I usually charge around $1000, and that's cheap for the amount of work I'm usually willing to do. It would probably be considerably less if it was just a CSS redesign, but more often than not (read: every single time in my experiences so far) you'll find that the original site is not equipped for a quick layout change like that and needs to be completely rebuilt from the ground up. xD Depending on the amount of content, I'll charge more or less. edit; Also, moved to Designers' Cafe. |

I charge a flat rate of £10 ($20) for a Myspace DIV. It's a hobby and although I can get away with charging a lot more, I'd rather clients feel they're getting a bargain and spread the word than become yet another web designer that overprices services.

Phew, I wish I could get paid for my DIVs! lol. I might start putting more times into the designs & browser compatibility.
Then again, I don't know if I'd pay myself for most of them! |
