Also what might help is try deleting stuff in your recycling bin AND your temporary folder
and to get there go to
Start > Run > and type in %temp%

You also may want to try doing a disk cleanup, and clearing out your recycle bin.

You know it's funny, disk cleanups never seem to help with sluggish processing times for me. Sometimes a disk defrag will, but lately I'm starting to think that the faster speed is all in my head. lol

most of the time when my friends computer is running slow its because he has too many start up programs. go to Start > Run > type 'msconfig' and go to the 'startup' tab and clean up some of the stuff you don't need when windows starts up. 'Services' is anouther tab to clean stuff up in but if you don't know what your doing you can really mess some things up.

As for viruses 'Avast Antivirus' and 'Spybot Search and Destroy'.

Quick trick is to clear up unnecessary files on your desktop and place other icons in folders

Cleaning up files isn't going to help much. It's just going to make more hard drive space. Any speed increase wouldn't be noticeable.
