Okay, so your going to be happy about a 'few' of them and completely overlook that he voted against the patriot act, which is an act that has protected this country for years, he voted to make the minimum wage the 'living wage' which will give uneducated people more money that will come out of the taxpayers pockets, not to mention he voted to give ILLEGAL immigrants social security, drivers licenses and welfare.

i don't think the patriot act has protected us. i think it's done more harm than good. how has the patriot act protected you? minimum wage is f**ked up, it can't even pay for the basic things that people need. full time workers should be able to pay for food and basic things like this. are you against that? what do you propose we do with illegal immigrants?

Some of those things are good, but then again, it's a matter of opinion. Although, I asked about his plans, not things he's done in the past. The past really doesn't matter too much, we need to worry about the future. I personally admire his stance on abortion laws. Okay, almost all people have used marajuana, they just don't admit it, I admire he has the courage to own up to what he's done in the past.

The most reliable sources would be the campaign websites, which I have read and studied. They actually are quite similar if you would read them. The news is just propaganda mostly, so if you want a better opinion, I'd stick straight with the source.

edit: Also, just because he HAS voted on some of these things doesn't mean he's going to put them into action. His views may have changed now. I suggest you find reliable sources off his campaign website and argue about what he WILL do to make this country what you believe to be worse.

All of these are of dubious origin, and I don't believe most of them, but just for the hell of it, I'm going to respond to them as though they're true.

* He voted against banning partial birth abortion.
Don't care. Well, okay, let me elaborate: I'm against partial-birth abortion, but it's not a make-or-break conviction for me. Ergo, apathetic on this point.

* He voted no on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions.
Also don't care.

* Supports affirmative action in Colleges and Government.
My views on affirmative action are ambivalent. Can you tell me why you think this is a "bad thing"?

* In 2001 he questioned harsh penalties for drug dealing.
I'm not against this. Let's be honest, we've lost the drug war, and we dump too much money into it as it is.

* Says he will deal with street level drug dealing as minimum wage affair.
A minimum wage affair? He's going to pay drug dealers? Or what? I don't get this.

* Admitted marijuana and cocaine use in high school and in college.
Big deal. I've admitted marijuana use in college, too. And look, I'm a grad student, so apparently it didn't f**k me up at all.

* His religious convictions are very murky.
omigod, like obama's a muslim right, and all muslims are bad, right? Seriously. First of all, he's not Muslim; second of all, if he was and that bothers you, that's your problem; and third of all, I don't care.

* He is willing to meet with Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Kim Jung Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
* Has said that one of his first goals after being elected would be to have a conference with all Muslim nations.

Oh geez, he wants to meet with legitimate foreign leaders instead of unilaterally attacking their sovereign territory? Call the presses! But no, really, why is this a bad thing? Diplomacy seems like a good thing.

* Opposed the Patriot Act.
GOOD. The PATRIOT Act is a failing of American democracy. It's patently unpatriotic. It takes rights from you and me. And it does nothing to protect us.

* First bill he signed that was passed was campaign finance reform.
Gasp! Oh my God! We can't have a person who wants to remove corruption from politics in office! Seriously, why do you think this is a bad thing?

* Voted No on prohibiting law suits against gun manufacturers.
Okay, I'm against law suits against gun manufacturers, too. I'm also against government over-regulation. But this is pretty much a non-issue for me, too.

* Supports universal health-care.
Why is universal health care a bad thing? Do you not get sick? Or, more importantly, do you think poor people don't get sick?

* Voted yes on providing habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees.
Anyone who votes against the illegal detainment of foreign nationals is okay in my book. America's violating the very rights that it supposedly espouses by keeping these "enemy combatants" in jail indefinitely. The Red Cross, UN, and international community all agree: Guantanamo is, at best, a black eye for America.

* Supports granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
* Supports extending welfare to illegal immigrants.
* Voted yes on comprehensive immigration reform.
* Voted yes on allowing illegal aliens to participate in Social Security.

Okay, admittedly, I don't know anything about the illegal immigration issue. Personally I think it's an issue cooked up by the Republican Party because they can't actually compete on real issues, like, well, every other domestic and foreign issue. Oh, and I also don't give a shit. But maybe you can explain why this is a bad thing?

* Wants to make the minimum wage a 'living wage'.
Hm. Yeah. What's wrong with this?

* Voted with Democratic Party 96 percent of 251 votes.
Well, I'm not a Democrat, but I'm also not a Republican. So to me, the only thing worse than voting with the Democrats 96% is voting with the Repubs 96%. But why do you think this is a bad thing?

* Opposed to any efforts to Privatize Social Security and instead supports increasing the amount of tax paid.
Well...Social Security's broken, anyway. I sure as hell don't know how to fix it, so I don't know if this is bad or good. What do you think?

* He voted No on repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax
* He voted No on repealing the 'Death' Tax.
* He wants to raise the Capital Gains Tax.

I'm not really against people with a lot of money paying taxes. Maybe that's unfair, but most people with money didn't make it fairly, anyway -- they made it by taking advantage of others. Maybe that's a narrow-minded view, but I think it's pretty true.

* Has repeatedly said the surge in Iraq has not succeeded.
Hey, I got a secret for you...come closer...IT HASN'T! We are not winning in Iraq. Thank God someone in politics has the balls to come out and say it.

* He is ranked as the most liberal Senator in the Senate today and that takes some doing.
Really? By what measure? I smell bullshit. I mean, really -- surely Kucinich must be in the running.

Now, level with me, where'd you find these "facts"? Fox News?

Um, are you joking? A better way to stop the spread of STDs would be for people to use adequate birth control. Thats it. And if it is legal, and they are getting screened for STDs, like hell that my tax money is paying for it. Im not supporting prostitution.

Um, no I'm completely serious.
Just because you think you are better than a woman, or man, that sells sex doesn't mean they don't have the right to do so. It's their bodies, their rights. If you don't like it don't pay for sex. But, when you support major corporations that sell sex, you might as well be paying for it.

If you knew ANYTHING at all about birth control you would know that it does not stop the spread of birth control. Condoms can, as someone else has already explained to you, but it's never 100%.

And, who said you'd be paying for it? I think if brothels were legalized there would be no problems. You go get your sex from a clean bitch in a hotel-like situation. No problems there, right?

And honestly, what if you were married one day and your spouse f**ked hookers, wouldn't you want to KNOW that hooker was clean?

I think that people are going to be involved in prostitution no matter if it is legal or not, but I am against legalizing it furthur because it just opens the doors to more and worse things being legalized.

That's a slippery-slope fallacy; it's completely irrelevant to the issue at hand. So, essentially, you haven't even formed an argument against legalized prostitution. And, if you think people are going to be involved in either way, don't you think it would be best if we don't waste our time making it a criminal matter - paying the police to busy themselves with blow jobs, paying to keep hookers and pimps fed in jail? Don't you think it would be best if we destroyed a black market - created a safer environment, stopped funding criminals, helped to stop the spread of STDs, and cleaned up the streets (for real) for once?

QUOTE(dosomethin888 @ Jul 29 2008, 11:51 AM) *
oh.. and its disgusting.

It's just sex, people give it away for free all the time... what's so disgusting about paying for it?

Could you maaybee merge the obama part of this thread to that thread? It's kind of hard to pick up an argument in one thread in another.

Unfortunately, partial merges are not possible. However, you can use the quote codes to reference whatever argument you wish to respond to and continue the conversation in that manner.

Patriot Act.. Im gonna let that go cause honestly I dont know much about it. Ill go read up on it and get back to you.
Secondly, I am sick and tired of my hard earned money going to ridiculous things.. and Im not going to work my ass off in college for 4 years to make a good living and have my taxes go to people who sit on their ass. Granted, I do agree that minimum wage is pretty low and can be raised a few dollars.. but its ridiculous for it to go up to a "living wage." Sorry. Everyone in todays society knows that if you have no education, you have low chances of having a good career. So get off your ass and work. And the thing about illegal immigrants. I propose that we kick those mooching illegal immigrants out of our country. If they want all of the rights and privelegs that come with being an American Citizen, they need to become a citizen the right way. We need to tighten our borders and that is something I would want my taxes going to. I cant believe there are some people out there who think people who are living in this country for FREE and paying NO taxes should have our rights. Its f**king ridiculous.

I may be old fashioned, unlike you, but I dont want my spouse f**king a prostitute no matter what. And I wouldnt marry a sleazebag that would. I believe in the sanctity of marriage. And im sorry, what did you say about birth control. I advise you re-read what you wrote cause it doesnt make much sense. And I do know about birth control. Prostitutes should go down to planned parenthood and get some FREE condoms so they wont get STDs and some FREE birth control pills so they dont get pregnant..
And if they do it is their fault.. they knew what they were getting into .. they are selling sex to strangers for sake!

I never said I think Im better than a man or woman who sells sex, nor do I think i am better than anyone. Ya, I agree it is their bodies, their rights when It comes to that. But I DO NOT want my money funding their behavior. Its as simple as that. And what major corporations am a funding that sell sex????

But I really dont think you are going to even consider what I have to say because you are someone who says that if my spouse is going to f**k a prostitute, she might as well be clean. Im not even on the same level as you.

We sure as hell should focus on the past. Looking at a candidates past is a way of forming our opinion about them, isnt it? See how they have voted, what they have done: good and bad? Because that is what makes up who they are and what they are going to do in the future. Its idiotic to completely disregard what they have done in the past and look to the future... And "his views may have changed now" : Probably not. They are probably the same, unless he has specified.
Reason for edit: 1. DO NOT DOUBLE/TRIPLE POST 2. I CREATED A THREAD FOR ELECTION DEBATE, USE IT!

I'll just comment on the on-topic thing.

Although, they wouldn't be able to get FREE birth control at Planned Parenthood, because most prostitutes do have money from the high fees they charge. Planned Parenthood offers reduced birth control prices to those in need, and will sometimes make a donation, but they just don't go about giving FREE birth control.

I did not know it was legal in Vegas. Someone could've told me this sooner!

I think it should be kept illegal because the majority of them look horrible. Once they start getting cuter girls, yeah, you can make it legal.

To my knowledge its only legal in certain places in Vegas but not all over it.

Anyway I'm a believer in its your body you do what you want with it. Its none of the governments business how you make money with it (unless its like drugs).

Some people are good at computers, others are good at managing businesses, but there's some people who aren't very good at anything except for having sex.

If people don't value themselves enough to not sell their bodies, it's their choice to whore themselves out. I think it should be legalized and monitored.

So much for woman power and liberation. Prostitution and the agreeance of prostitution just shows how weak women are around the world. thumbsup.gif

Go to the Middle East, there you will find powerful women, intelligent women, respectful women, high self esteem having women, beautiful inside and out women. wub.gif

Prositution in the Middle East has even been recently reported on here, here, and here.

Afghanistan = horribly poor nation where their people are more than likely to become heroin addicts

Dubai = democratic nation who lacks Islamic laws

Iraq = democratic nation who's been torn inside out and also lacks Islamic laws.

Regardless the statistics are no where as bad as all other parts of the world.
