is my professor stupid? i'm taking a communications class intro to public speaking, and we have to do like 5 minute speeches almost everyday. so last week, i did my speech, and i got a 24/25 on my speech. the one point i lost was because he said i was too confident and cocky. wtf? he said i should be more humble. i mean is it my fault i'm not shy and humble like most of the students in the class. most of the students in my class are like shy and awkward when they do their speeches. f**ken bullshit man. i thought public speaking was about having confidence in speaking in front of a large group of people. this 1 point better not cost me an A- to a B+.

a good speaker does not come across like a cocky a-hole. i would've taken off more than a point. some of the people who got a 25/25 were way worser than me. they freaking read off their note cards, and barely had eye contact. also said umm, yeah, like, all the damn time. but because they were shy and shit, professor felt sorry and gave them a 25 for effort >_> Don't be...overbearing, I suppose. A 24/25 is still good. D: Good isn't good enough. I strive for perfection. |

^if that's the case you could argue that they do not deserve perfect scores either. if anything, a 24/25 just for effort is more than enough.

It's about you and how you carry yourself, not about others. What image did you intend to portray? if you just say the lines out, it doesnt cut it. Although you're upset about your professor, take that into a consideration to convince him in your next speech. Teacher's perspectives are different. Some suck ass, but it doesn't mean we cant learn from them. what can you really do? It's good that you stand out in front of those losers. Presenting your speech is an art. Make it pleasing for your professor. ![]() Winner makes the grades. Good luck. |

Good isn't good enough. I strive for perfection. Haha, you sound like my mom, Tung. ![]() Well, from what you've said, it sounds unfair that you got a point of for "cockiness." I guess there's a fine line between confidence and arrogance. It is important to be confident, but you have to carry your speech with coherence and eloquence. I guess the audience would be more pleased by the speech if you weren't too overbearing. |

Damn, I've never lost any points on speeches for being TOO outgoing. I guess you just have to find that middle ground. Or bitchslap your professor with your paper and demand the point back. Who's overbearing now...

hey kanye were you late for your presentation too? Off-topic, one of my friends was there, and he was pissed because his group chose that show instead of another one that was both good and on time. ._. Tung, is it possible that he thought you weren't taking it seriously? He could have a misconception about your personality and maybe all it will take is for you to prove him wrong. I'd see it as a challenge and just try to do better next time. One thing I've learned is never to get upset about other people's grades - worry about your own. If someone does better than you on something, maybe you should try to feel happy for them rather than thinking it might have been graded unfairly simply because someone got a better grade than you did. |

^if that's the case you could argue that they do not deserve perfect scores either. if anything, a 24/25 just for effort is more than enough. Inorite?! It's like the professor has a grade scale for each person individually. it's not fair, and i would like to see a more consisentent grading system. just cuz some foreign exchange student did okay doesn't mean he should get a 25, while i did great and got a 24, and lost one point b/c of something he is nitpicking on. why didn't he nitpick on the shy kids, who stood up there mumbling like hell, and basically reading off his note cards. but because the teacher knew the kid was shy, he applaud his effort and gave him 25 public speaking is not entirely about having confidence. it's images, gestures, attitudes, looks, and every aspect of your movements. You sure that point wasn't for grammar? ![]() lol haha, no. it's not an english class ![]() |

Yeah...but what class wouldn't take off for grammatical errors? Those would be a speech faux pas. That said, I only know how you type, not how you speak.

I strive for perfection. HAHAHHAHAHAHA HAHAHHAHAH AHAHHAHAHA AHHAHAHAH AAHAHAHAHHAHAH ![]() Anyways, AUGH this reminds me of Spanish 3/4 in high school. My teacher gave me a B- on my oral presentation and said I was lucky that I even got a B-, even though other students were reading off note cards, didn't pronounce correctly, etc. and got B+'s. I was so pissed but there was nothing I could do, even though I pronounced correctly and even got my Mexican friend to correct my dialogue before I presented. WTF. I didn't want to argue because I think that my professor would've deducted more points. SHIT, it left me with a B+ during my freshman year. >=[ just cuz some foreign exchange student did okay doesn't mean he should get a 25 In defense of the exchange students, keep in mind that they are TRYING to do well. It's difficult for them. For example, if you went to study abroad to Japan and all the Japanese students attending that college are obviously speaking fluently. You at at a disadvantage, correct? HOWEVER, most likely the professor with KNOW that of it and will give you a decent grade for effort, as long as you show improvement with as much effort as you can to put it in.

To be fair, there is a huge difference between being comfortable and confident while speaking, and coming across as either over-enthused or cocky and irritating. It really isn't enjoyable to listen to someone who's talking as if they KNOW they are the supreme authority on any given topic.

^ Well, I get that, but like, it's a class on public speaking... so if the guy didn't think the speech was perfect (or the delivery, or whatever), then why would it get a perfec score?

^ the thing is, shouldn't the grading be consistent? i mean there should be a standard on what constitutes as a 25, or a 24. clearly the professor is favoring and grading differently for each individual. i think i would be more okay that i got a 24, if only he didn't give people a 25 who were far worse than i was, and it was pretty obvious it wasn't as good, from the tone of the attitude of the listeners during the speech.

After all, shitty as it is, it's only his opinion which counts. |
