I use 1and1. I don't remember a long wait. Probably like 24 hours.

4 seconds, 4 seconds, 4 seconds!
dreamhost isn't anything amazing anyway. plans are cheap, plans are huge, but they do oversell space & bandwidth and their mysql server is slower than death.

mediatemple <3

pffft.

dreamhost is fine if you're just running personal sites. and even though i run my dad's company's website, he really only needs it for the email.

and anyways.

i have better things to be spend $20/month on.

oh well.

so i just signed up for 1and1 and now i'm kinda worried if i made the right decision.

what i've been looking for is a host that gives a domain name with a lot of bandwidth and space. also, an email account at a cheap price. is there another place besides 1and1 that does that?

i've checked out all of the hosts that people recommended in the other thread but 1and1 was the only one i saw that was what i was looking for. noticed bad reviews about it so i questioned my decision.

1and1 is known for their shitty customer service and lots of downtime. They're incredibly cheap, which is why I like to buy my domain names with them, but I always switch hosting to another reliable host.

And before Thomas kills me - I offer domain hosting through my Dreamhost account (dreamhost gets pretty good reviews). If you go to my site [exklamity, not heartquasm], then navigate to the domain hosting, you can get the specifics. I consider myself pretty cheap, so... yep.

well, it depends on where you registered your domain. what you'll want to do is cancel your hosting account asap, but keep your domain name. then, all you have to do is switch the DNS at the location where you registered your domain.

1and1 may be known for having cheap pricing and services, but i think for the typical personal site, it's fine. i doubt a lot of the people signing up for them have high traffic anyway.

one of my friend's sites, which does get an extreme amount of traffic, crashed when he was hosted under dreamhost. there's really no perfect cheap host. there's bound to be downtime. but it's true that there seems to be an inverse relationship between price and service(higher price, less downtime/better service).
