Well, what program are you using? I know in Paint Shop Pro there's a point-to-point selection setting that I always use. It takes forever, but if you do it right it's usually smooth. If not, there's an option that smooths it out for you. It's not perfect, but it fixes little mistakes.
If you're not using PSP then...well, I don't know. It's probably similar. |

oh ps2 doesn't have that tool? that sucks. well what method do you use right now? i used to use the lasso tool, make a selection, with some space, around my subject & then get my eraser tool & erase the unwanted stuff. or the pen tool is another possibility.

I use the pen tool... but I don't know whether you'd considering it easy or not. Before I knew how to use that, I went to Filter > Extract. It doesn't come out as nicely, but it still works.
What tool do you use now? |

Here's how I do it:
Filter > Extract Select the Edge Highlighter Tool and outline the image you want to cut out with a colour of your choice (best to use the colour that shows up least in the image). Then you use the Fill Tool of the same colour. Press Preview on the side. Clean it up with the Clean Up Tool, or use the Edge Touchup Tool to fix up some edges. |

I'm using CS. Depending on what I'm doing (what I'm carving images out for), I either use the pen or lasso tool to select what I want, and eraser brush (if I'm doing a blend) or the extract tool. I'm particularly horrid at using the extract tool, so typically I'll use the first two options.
You may want to try this and/or look through some of the other tutorials available here. (moved to Graphics Help) |

or just use the lasso tool, a tip I use is I blow up the picture like 500 percent so that it looks smooth at 100 percent:]

^ Lasso tool is pretty good, because you can choose exactly where you want the line to go. You just have to have steady hands. I'd say it's the second best option apart from the Pen tool, but that's not simple.
You can use the regular "free" lasso or the polygonal lasso. The regular lasso tool will be harder to work with because you have to make the selection all in one go, but if you're good, it will be smoother. The polygonal lasso makes points instead, so you should put down a point pretty frequently, and in the end, when you're done selecting, do Select --> Modify --> Smooth, and choose from 2-10 pixels, depending on the size of the image. |

Lasso tool ftw <3
But here how i do it. You just put the picture in a "new file with the same size" then you color the background picture with any color that the image doesn't have to stand out. Then you enlarge(I enlarge it to 200)and slowly cut part and part of the picture out. When you are done delete the background layer and BOOM!@ Hope this help (took me a while to master it) |
