Tomorrow, Tuesday (well I guess later on today), we are putting down my dog Casey. He has lived a very long life, about 14 years, but it is still really hard. He has lost control of his bowel movements (ie, he shits in the house sometimes) and has difficulty standing up and sitting down, his back legs are giving out. My parents are leaving for Mexico next week and then my sister and I are both going out town so they didn't want a)for him to get worse and us to have to deal with this by ourselves and b)to have to pay for someone to take care of him and then have him get worse/die without us there. I am just so upset and don't think it's his time to go :(

Has anyone had to put their beloved pet, dog or not, down?

rachel i totally understand what you're feeling. 3 years ago my dog lady was in that same situation. she couldn't control her bowel movements so we put a diaper on her. she was losing control of her legs so when i took her out to do her business outside i'd have to carry her, and hold her back side up while she did her business.

we took her to the vet thinking she'd have be put down, so we gave her a really good dinner w/ a t-bone steak the works. but when we got to the vet she said that because she still has an appetite and she was alert she let us take her home.

but after my sisters came home that christmas right after they left, she got worse. she was our dog since i was little. it was really hard...i would've done anything to keep her alive. but, it was her time. i mean i had to realize that it was the best for her because what kind of life is it for a dog who can run around and play.

i'm sorry for whats going on. stay strong my dear. <33

It hasn't happened to me, but my boyfriend's chowchow, CeCe (male) was put to sleep after about 15-16 years. sad.gif He was in a lot of pain and couldn't walk. I think he had some wound or something on him, and his back had a lot of oozing puss coming out of it. My bf had that dog since his family moved into their current house, which is since he was 2 years old, and it died sometime when we were in our senior of high school.

CeCe lived a good life though. Living off of dog food and a big pan of fried rice every day. YEA, FRIED RICE! I miss that dog. :cry; He was like a miniature lion-bear. cry.gif

And Rachel, that's unfortunate console.gif My dog isn't old enough to be put down yet, but man when she does, I'm going to be sad. :/ The attachment we have with our pets is really strong, so it's hard when you've grown up with it. :[

I'm really sorry for what you are about to lose. I can understand to a point what you are thinking because my dog died about 3 years ago. After walking home, the neighbor just came outside and smiled and was like your dog died. (He's a brat) Thinking it was a joke, I found they had already buried her, which really pissed me off.

Yes, it's better that you all are there with her for her last moments. Sorry sad.gif

Memorial day two years ago, we put down our dog which was older than me and I had known since the day I came home from the hospital. We decided we had to when we found her sprawled across the kitchen one day and completely unable to get up because her legs went out in all different directions. She was so scraggly looking, and it would take her upwards of 5 minutes to sit down because her arthritis was so bad. Also, she was deaf. It sucked, I'd known her for 17 years.

Aw Rachel. hug.gif

Yeah, back in 2001 we had to put down my cat and it was so sad cause he wasn't that old but he was going through kidney failure and there was nothing else they could do. I was only 13 and I cried sooo much. It was awful. sad.gif So yeah, I wish you the best and I know how tough it is.

Hey ladies and Steven, thanks. It was really hard, I almost couldn't be in the room but thankfully it was over within 5 minutes. I can't believe he's gone, but he did have a great 14 years. *sigh*

i'm really sorry about your dog, rachel. console.gif
i know it's hard to think about but he's in a better place now. i remember when my dog died. i cried soooooooo much. i didn't even to go school for 2 days because it affected me that much. he was my baby & i miss him so much 4 months later. i can't imagine loosing my two puppies like how i lost my other dog (he ran away & someone hit him on the freeway cry.gif). to this day, it's hard for me to even go visit his grave (he was buried in our backyard). *sigh* i'm getting all sad just typing this. sad.gif i really don't know what else to say but to hang in there. take it slow if you plan on getting another dog.

feel better flowers.gif

ohmigosh, I'm so sorry. cry.gif

I got my dog three years ago, and I know that if I had to put my dog down, I would be a mess for awhile. I totally understand how you feel because your pets get so close to you over the years, that they become your best and friend, and part of your family. If he is suffering, at least he wont be in any more pain, which is good. Still, it is an extremely hard experience to overcome. sad.gif

I wish you the best of luck.

Aw, I know how hard it can be, but in the end it's usually what's best for the animal. Rather than them suffering.

My mom's dog had to be put down a few years ago. I live on a farm, so the vet makes stops out here and he put our dog to sleep and it was really hard on my mom, because she and that dog were attached at the hip.

After she was put to sleep, she was in a little plastic container with her blanket over her and her favorite toy with her. My mom went to go see her and my mom said her name and she woke up. She just about gave my mom a heart attack and the vet had to come back.

I'm sorry... A year or so ago we lost both our dogs with a couple months of each other, it was really sucky... At least things ended in a way where you can look back and be happy with the memories, without things getting any worse.

Sorry Rachel, never had this happen to me. I had one dog and he suddenly disappeared. But I been scared of dogs since these people down the road had a rotweiler that chased me on numerous occasions. So I never had a pet since that one.

Worst.Day.Ever.

It's so sad. He was always so excited when we'd come home, looking out for us at the window then running up to the door and everything.

So before that dog was put down, we had these two other dogs, Mario and Luigi (lol). A few months before we moved, Mario managed to get out of the yard and ran into the street and got hit by a car. :\ Then when we moved and had the other dog (who was her sister) we left her in the house one day and came home to find out that she tore up the couches and the blinds, don't know why. A few months later she jumped the fence and got hit by a migrant worker who was landscaping the neighbors yard. Now we have two other dogs, a black lab and a rhodesian ridgeback, they're pretty awesome :)

I'm sorry, Rachel. :[ A dog I used to have was diagnosed with parvo and that was scary enough, let alone deal with putting your animal to sleep.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Rachel. I know how horrible that must feel. sad.gif My friend's dog was put to sleep without her knowing (it was her parent's choice) and she was crying for a good week in school. She says she sometimes hears him barking and her other dog would sometimes be barking at nothing and she thinks it might be her dog. Rest in peace to your beloved.
