Usher's new song is called "Love in This Club," which I'd have had no idea of if I hadn't watched the SNL finale. But it sucks, don't listen.

Ok. Being high on charts and popular absolutely does not mean that something is good. It means that a mainstream label has decided that it will have widespread appeal to the the majority of the population. This (generally stupid) majority does not bother to explore what music they would prefer if all music were presented equally, and is more than happy accept whatever predetermined hit comes their way. The entertainment media decides that a song will be popular, it will be popular. It doesn't mean that it has any artistic or musical value whatsoever. When a band that was on an independent label signs to a major label and their songs make the charts, it does not mean that these songs are better than their old ones, but that they've been tailored to suit the needs to get public, who is so accustomed to listening to the most mediocre of music. Hence, selling out. People like Usher, ok, they have a stage presence and all that. They might have decent voices and when that fails them, hey, there's always auto tune. Production can make up for anything. Nevermind who writes the songs, how vapid and useless and cliche the lyrics are, because so long as Usher keeps being sexy and the songs get stuck in people's heads, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference.
In short: if people are told that a song will be the next big hit, it will be the next big hit. Doesn't matter what it is, just so long as it's not too original. So you're totally right. Songs without a damn bit of originality or artistic merit are so much better than the real music I listen to simply because they've achieved a virtually meaningless ranking. (But no really, I'm completely lost by your Lil Wayne point...and not just because I'm not entirely sure who that is.) |

And yet my logic = flawed even though what I bolded is based on opinion and preference rather than fact? Of course you're going to say Usher sucks because R&B and Rap don't appeal to you. Of course I beg to differ because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even listen to 5 seconds of what you listen to. I'm sorry I didn't know a song had to fit a certain criteria in order to be a good song. Thanks to you , next time I listen to a song I'm going to try to find originality and artistic merit as opposed to just enjoying listening to the song. ![]() |

Bullshit, I listen to some hip-hop. Your logic is flawed if you think a song is better just because it's number one on a chart. That's really all that matters here.
As far as originality and all that goes, well, it's a matter of knowing why you listen to something. If you're fine with being fed shit, cool. (Also, you don't have to listen to most things I listen to. I can't avoid the mainstream entirely. And I still have no idea why you brought up a Lil Wayne song I've never heard when I was talking about Usher.) |

Because I remember clearly when Steven was here, you were in every thread ranting about how rap sucks no matter if it was underground or mainstream. I was always puzzled as to why someone who hated rap so much posted in the threads. I mean if I don't like My Chemical Romance, why would I post in that thread? I don't have that little to do with my time. Honestly how can you say something is original anyway? I don't care what you listen to , there is no originality. Lupe Fiasco supposed to be original isn't he, but yet he isn't telling me nothing I haven't heard before. All it is is different words same story. All artists no matter what genre fall under some category. Because Lil Wayne >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Noz |

I don't really remember that, but I've matured since then? I'm honestly very open minded when it comes to music. I don't automatically hate listening to things because they're on charts either, but I generally don't consider them good music.
I'm not familiar with Lupe Fiasco, but when I say originality I don't so much mean that it hasn't been influenced by other things, or that it sounds completely unlike anything else. More that something contain elements of creativity and isn't completely trite. The lyrics of "Love In This Club" sound like a conglomeration of every top 40 song, which would be fine on its own because very little is original, but musically it's no better. And I know this is all a matter of opinion, but you cannot say something that isn't lyrically or musically amazing is better than anything I listen to just because it's popular, when I listen to some very good lyricists and musicians. You don't have to care or like them. But I do find it demeaning to anyone who writes their own music and plays instruments to say that they've worse than Usher. So your logic was flawed when you tried to add comparative values to anything I listen to versus Usher; it's subjective and doesn't work. |
