Internet Explorer width issue

again, problems with the width. i just submitted a layout that i was pretty please with in every browser, except internet explorer.

i'm trying to get the classes .content and .interests to be 100% of a screen width. in firefox, safari, and opera, simply applying width:100%; works as it should. it refuses to do so in internet explorer.

i've tried changing display properties, using the !important extension, and anything else i can think of. no matter what i do, internet explorer is refusing to recognize a percentage width, so i've been forced to do a temporary fix of giving it a fixed width of 800px, to avoid a bottom scroll bar on browsers with 800x600 resolution.

any ideas?
