I really don't want to fail math just because I can't grasp the actual subject, but it looks like that's how it's going to go down. I thought having a curved grading scale would really help me, but it's obviously not. Hopefully I kicked ass on the last test, and kill the final tomorrow, but I'm really doubting myself. I'd feel ridiculously stupid retaking the class, but it's probably what I'll have to do if I don't pull a C because I have to have this class to get into upper units. Every class requires that I pass this one with a C. FUCK!

Sucks for you Spencer. Study your ass off and practice, practice, practice those math problems.

Of the five pages that I need to write for this essay, I have written... three sentences. I am stuck. Writers block. I hate writing.

!@#$%^&*()_. What do you guys get from this guy:

The persistence of Mexican immigration into the United States reduces the incentives for cultural assimilation. Mexican Americans no longer think of themselves as members of a small minority who must accommodate the dominant group and adopt its culture. As their numbers increase, they become more committed to their own ethnic identity and culture. Sustained numerical expansion promotes cultural consolidation and leads Mexican Americans not to minimize but to glory in the differences between their culture and U.S. culture. As the president of the National Council of La Raza said in 1995: "The biggest problem we have is a cultural clash, a clash between our values and the values in American society." He then went on to spell out the superiority of Hispanic values to American values. In similar fashion, Lionel Sosa, a successful Mexican-American businessman in Texas, in 1998 hailed the emerging Hispanic middle-class professionals who look like Anglos, but whose "values remain quite different from an Anglo's." . . . .

Continuation of this large immigration (without improved assimilation) could divide the United States into a country of two languages and two cultures. Much the same lack of dual competence is true of Walloons and Flemings in Belgium. The transformation of the United States into a country like these would not necessarily be the end of the world; it would, however, be the end of the America we have known for more than three centuries. Americans should not let that change happen unless they are convinced that this new nation would be a better one.

Such a transformation would not only revolutionize the United States, but it would also have serious consequences for Hispanics, who will be in the United States but not of it.

What I see is that he's against Mexicans having pride in their roots and culture and that he wants everyone to assimilate to American society. Also, that we're going to be a divided country with Mexicans on one side and Americans on the other. How the hell am I supposed to tie that into class lectures/readings? THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THAT. asdfghjkl i hate my teacher blah blah blah

!@#$%^&*()_. What do you guys get from this guy:
really long quote.

Dunno if you still need this, but it seems to me that he wants more limits on immigration in general. I doubt that his point is that Mexican nationalism needs to be toned down, because generally that's not a problem until violence comes into the picture.

QUOTE
Americans should not let that change happen unless they are convinced that this new nation would be a better one.

If this ends up in some sort of discussion, bring up the question of why a nation would be worse because of the heightening culture gap, and maybe even why it could be better... if there is a reason like that at all. Is there a problem with a culture gap as long as all the cultures stay under one flag? Does the author imply that the cultural values are so different that another civil war could be imminent?

wtf am i trying to analyze your reading for

What are your class readings about anyway? I mean besides this...

Lol. The readings from are class are basically about the struggles and history of Mexican Americans, government policies that affect them, etc. To be honest, I did not read half of the books. The reason I was having a hard time with analyzing that guy's quote is because he's making assumptions on how things are now and how they are going to be in the future, whereas my class lectures and readings focus on the past.

Lol, yeah I'm going to use that with the language issue. But the point of the essay, being also the "final exam", is to use examples from the lectures and readings to show that we actually paid attention in class.

I got a f**king A- in English and I don't understand why. Not to mention a B+ in political science when I should have had an A-. f**k school, I am so sick of this shit. And I've been on break for nearly a week.

Not as pissed as I was last week when I found out that I got an 85% on my political science midterm while my boyfriend got 92%. WTF is that shit -- he studied for at most 30 minutes and I studied for over 5 hours. And I swear I wrote what I thought was right. Then I looked at the comments and was like, wtf @ how it's graded. But I'm not going to complain because they might consider looking at my boyfriend's grade and I don't want them to lower his grade. Shit, now I'm going to get a B+ in a class that I think I should deserve an A- in, at least. D:

I even wrote all the answers to the study guide, too. WTF, and my boyfriend sleeps in class. pinch.gif And check this -- my boyfriend studied off of MY STUDY GUIDE, which is what the test was based off of. That makes no sense!
