i always thought guys were faster than girls. i was sure that if a girl ever tried to slap me i would just block her hand away. but today, this cute blonde at school and i get into an argument, and she goes uuhh, and then flips her right hand out to the side. a second later, *slap* she got me square on my left cheek, and my face just spun to the side. i thought for sure i'd block that, but you can't. she was too fast. you can't even move. i'm like daaaamn! how can you block that? and ladies, have you ever done it? does it work that easily usually? and how come we can't block it? do you think most guys can?

Because guys are typically more physically fit. It's a proven stereotype, and to deny it on the basis of feminism would be stupid.

Uh... a slap is slower than a jab. I'm pretty sure you could have blocked it but maybe it just caught you by surprise.

I don't know about that, but I'd agree that guys are inherently (generally) stronger physically than women.

I don't think she was faster than you, I think she caught you by surprise.

the element of surprise could catch anyone off guard, hahaa, so i don't know if guys are slower than girls exactly. when i was in the seventh grade, i slapped a guy using my right hand (on his left cheek) and yup, no blocking whatsoever. but it was clearly because he wasn't expecting it.

i'll admit guys are generally stronger than girls but i don't think that has to do with speed -_-;;

correct me if i'm wrong, which i could probably well be.

I'm pretty sure if you see it coming, most people can block, or move out of the way of a slap.
Like most of the people above me have already said, it was just the element of surprise.

Strength is a byproduct of Type II B muscle fibers, which dictate force output capacity. The stronger these are, the faster your muscles can contract. This is why world-class male sprinters are huge compared to skinny, plodding marathon runners. They need the myofibrils, which contract and generate tension, within the muscle mass for burst movement.

Strength directly correlates with speed.

Well, if you knew she was going to slap you, you might have been able to stop it. But I'm not one to base life on theory. Go get her and tell her to meet you out by the flagpole and tell her to try and slap you.

Out of curiosity, could you tie that in w/ agility?

<,< That's what agility is; quickness... as well as flexibility in a sense.

Agility: the power of moving quickly and easily; nimbleness: exercises demanding agility.

Throw in flexibility.

I know people who have straight up power, and people who aren't very strong but can move incredibly quick.

If you specifically mean "nimbleness", look at male gymnasts:

That goes back to the ability of the myofibrils within the muscle fiber to generate tension. Strength training creates myofibrillar hypertrophy - enlargement of the myofibrils (conversely, bodybuilding is sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, an increase in the volume of non-contractile muscle cell fluid to "pump-up" the muscle). The greater the ability of the muscle to contract, the more honed the tension is that can be applied, which results in more control the athlete has over movement to attain lightness, quickness, power, etc.

They're stronger than they would be if they weren't fast. Speed is derived from the same muscle fiber type as strength. They would also be faster if they became stronger.

Flexibility comes into play from fiber elasticity. The tension generated by strength, in the long term, has the ability to increase the recoil ability of the muscle fibers. Strength training, in the short term, contradicts this on its own, because the fibers shorten as a defense mechanism against the stress of being stretched and contracted (depending on the eccentric and concentric portion) by the movement, but this is rectified with stretching. It's also why stretching shouldn't be done before resistance training, because the elongation diminishes immediate force output.

Wow, so technical..

Back to the basic question, haha I think its just a matter of surprise like most said. I've gotten guys before, but they've also moved out of the way so it depends really.
