I was watching BBC World News Monday and they said Sunday night Pakistan blocked Youtube in Pakistan, but then shut it down around the world for two hours.

The story

Did anyone try to go on youtube on Sunday and couldn't get on? Just wondering.

So what do they think its some sort of "Terrorist Act" ?

It was probably a bunch of geeks with nothing to do hiding in a bomb shed and they all decided well if we cant hack into the white house or some important piece of machine then let us sabotage youtube.

haha sorry, im feeling a little creative today.

I hate BBC... it's sometimes legit... but most of the time it's full of SHIT!!

How the hell can a government or a person or a country or anyone who's not an account holder or registrar, or host be able to shut down a website?

They can't. Only the account holder (youtube owner) or registrar or hosting company can "shut down/suspend" a website/domain.

People... use common sense and tell BBC to shut itself down.

Uh, it's fairly simple to do.

No... unless the website is used in terms of scamming people, terrorist communications, piracy, child pornography, bestiality, or child romance stories.

NO one has the right to shut down a website. Unless of course the person impersonated the account holder and discontinued their services. And now a days that's nearly impossible because of the verification process.

Even if someone was able to hack into the website, the worst they can do is delete all the data that was held in the server, but not even that would do anything because people now a days save their copies (websites) onto the host's server, which refreshes after so many seconds anyways.

So no, it's not simple... now a days it's nearly impossible. Unless the site is some personal owned site and they have their own web server.

=\

Tamacracker, seriously. If a country decided to force a website to shut down through nefarious means, it's not hard to do. Nothing to do with "rights".

I'll not argue with you, though I do miss the days where you could typingly prawn any who voiced doubts to the contrary.

Ok, give me a scenario in which a country can shut down a website that's hosted in another country without taking legal action. Please enlighten me.

You do realize that cracking is the process of illegally obtaining access to a server or a website right?... And that process is nearly impossible for fact being, you'd need a super computer running about the power of 10 computers only to run 1 program in which finds the proper "encrypted" credentials. And do you know how long that could take up to?... 10 YEARS!!!!

Do you know how many times servers change their own security credentials in a year? At LEAST 12 times a year. -.-

I wouldn't mind tellin this to the NOC department, I just gotta some how introduce it to them in a jokingly way so they don't think I'm the moron who doesn't know anything about server security and encrypted credentials.

P.S.
Bold = WRONG.
It could be possible that they "block" a website from a country (specifically theirs). But that's all.

No wonder YouTube wasn't working for me that day. I was pretty desperate waiting to see if I got new video comments. Rofl.

I received a PM explaining to me that I was being hostile for no reason... I quoted the post you made only to find out you edited and that's what made me look like being hostile. When in reality I was standing up for the fact of this matter.

And I'm not tryin to argue with you. You didn't realize the source you used gets laughed at around the world for misleading their viewers. I just wanted to correct the issue so that people don't think a specific person, government, or country for that matter can control a website, especially from another country. But they can control the existence of it on their servers (filtering/blocking).
