Rollovers, discussing rollovers. Options

Why does it seem like one of every 200 myspace layouts has rollovers? They really aren't hard to do.. so why arent people using them?

People's taste/abilities are different. . .Just because you like it doesn't mean everyone else should use it.

Rollovers aren't always necessary. If a designer wants to keep things simple, s/he can choose not to make them. Honestly, I feel like it's unreasonable for people to expect every or most MySpace layout(s) to have rollovers for the navigation. They are nice, yes, but not required. It kind of annoys me to have people saying "Rollovers would be nice" or "You need rollovers" on every single rollover-less MySpace DIV. There are some layouts that would look significantly better with rollovers if the navigation is especially sparse or plain, but otherwise not every layout needs them.

Not every layout needs them (especially if the main image/background/whatever is very busy, then rollovers would be too much). It's been said before, but I agree that people have different tastes.

That also irritates me. A layout's quality isn't determined by rollovers.

I for one can't stand links that don't do something - even if it's subtle - when you hover over them. It's confusing to me if I go to a site that has links that do nothing when you hover. Even if it's just going from text-decoration: underline to text-decoration: none. It makes me think, honestly, that the link div is positioned underneath another layer and is getting covered up due to z-index problems.

That having been said, I don't really care for image links for that reason. I prefer text links, but if you must have your navigation mapped on an image, I do feel like it gives the layout a great deal of professionalism if it has a subtle yet noticeable hover effect. I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions, but in my personal opinion especially when there's a very plain-looking navigation system based on an image map, you should be using some sort of rollover effect. If that means changing the text color, changing the background color, underlining, adding a small shape next to it, whatever. I think it's necessary.

I kind of agree with what was said above. Not everyone likes the things in the first place so of course they wouldn't immediately do it. Also just because some find it easy, not everyone else does. I'm actually glad to not see less rollovers. Around Summer - Sept. That's all we got. Were the same style layouts with the same style rollovers, it got annoying and overplayed. Even though the designs were different it seemed like we just kept accepting the same layouts over and over.

Actually I find rollovers pretty hard to code. It's probably just me though, but even if I did find it easy to code I doubt I'd put it on every single layout I make.

I agree with what the others have said. I think it's just a matter of something in the back of your head, telling you that "oh, I must use rollovers because they'll make my layout look more complex and therefore fancier, and it will show that I am a super awesome layout designer!".

Exactly it shouldn't, matter, as long as the layout still looks awesome.

Yep same thing with me which is why i started using the "Advanced Style" Navigation on my layouts. I mean rollovers are nice, but not everyone has the patience to make/upload more images.

and it has the dullest navigation
i mean, you spent so much time on the layout, why not just make the rollovers?

i only tell people to add rollovers to their layouts when i think they need them. and a lot of people on here need them.

I would defiantely put rollovers on web templates but not myspace layouts because when I do, it turns out to be something I didnt want, it coul;d be style or whatever, but I think rollovers look better on tabs in web templates:]

Because Rollovers are quite the challenge, especially since more than half of that 200 layouts only started mastering DIV coding, so don't get your pants in a knot because some of us are not advance as you. So it doesn't matter, man. Simplicity has its advantages.

Sometimes the thought of adding extra time to design rollovers onto a layout when I've spent hours designing and coding it already brings me out in a cold sweat.

It's a completely personal preference thing.

It takes me a while to make rollovers for each layout, but I try to do it anyway .. although it could just be my coding style.

yeah, it just depends on the layout and person. some people just can't comprehend rollovers, others will overboard it and do countless rollovers. although i have been putting rollovers on all my layouts since i've figured it out. i just make sure not to make it too much. a simple color change is fine for a rollover, IMO...

it's actually quiet simple. really easy to understand, as long as you have the full details and such. it does take a bit longer than just throwing around some DIV's over an image, but the result is usually totally worth it.
i was actually thinking about writing a CCS rollover tutorial...the one's already in tutorials are kinda jumpy, IMO.

I personally dont like coding rollovers. I use rollvers but never on layouts or divs. Some people comment almost everyone of my submissions and ask for rollovers then I check their profile and I find their layouts without rollovers. hypocrite much?

yeah, i definitely agree with basically what everyone has already mentioned. but i guess since they are so popular, i might put them into any future layouts.
