Striking up a conversation, my friend brought up MTV. We talked about how much MTV has strayed away from what it was originally intended for - music television. One would think that MTV would show music videos, non-stop, 24/7. In reality, music videos are a very small portion of MTV. The music video segment probably lasts only about an hour then the programming changes to numerous worthless reality television shows, especially the dating shows. At this rate, watching the channels scroll up on the television guide channel is more entertaining.

What do you think of MTV and its programming?

if you thought 2007 was a year of reality tv, expect 2008 to be the most since all the writers have gone on strike.

i watched more music videos when i was younger than i ever did now. in fact i can't stand to watch music videos anymore but that's just me. haha i grew up watching daria, spyder games and that one college drama sex show late at night.

MTV was better when it just played videos. Now they have more shows than music.

I really hate it when channels stray away from their original purpose. I mean, honestly there's enough reality shows these days and we don't really need a channel that's not even meant for reality to have it on for the majority of the time shrug.gif

Marketing has increasingly dumbed down their shit as younger people grow older. That is to say, people in their pre-teens are now maturing faster than any other generation; wearing more makeup, being more absorbed into how they look, and how they wish their lives were like those on reality television, or something. MTV and the rest of it all have to target their mass audience, and that is likely the younger kids.

I've never been into television, but "cool" and trends all have to change over time, that includes when we all say "back in the day, it was better. . ." because it's not something that can be controlled.

I agree with a lot of what's been said, but MTV is about more than just msuic, it's (supposed) to be a cult lifestyle.

True Indeed it is, but I don't think people will be joining this cult after a while.

Agreed, mainly because it's too corporate to be a cult anymore.

Yes, that and foolish dating shows. It is quite ridiculous. I enjoyed the True Life stories but I don't see them anymore. Real World isn't good anymore neither, it's trite and too dramatic.

Are you kidding me? MTV is religious proselytizing for corporate America and has been for years and years now. MTV and their trigger fingers are the buyers and sellers of "cool." And, kids eat that shit up. And, really, there is no sign of it slowing - sure, "cool" might transform a bit, but MTV hires people to keep their eyes on "cool." MTV hires people to write checks, enormous checks, to buy out "cool." And, it isn't going to stop until the entire world turns off its radios and televisions (and that isn't going to stop anytime soon).

Not to mention, any of the music videos that would be shown on MTV suck anyways - just more elaborate commercials. And, if you really care to watch that superfluous shit - get MTV2 or something. f**k.

I sort of don't mind MTV now days because I kind of enjoy the reality TV they air. As well as watching TRL. If I want to hear/see music/videos, I would watch Fuse. Or that one channel, IM something. International Music something. Forgot.

Exactly.

MTV DOESN'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE/ALL OTHER MINORITIES.
