I read this question not long ago online. I have been thinking about it so much since then.
I have heard that SO many times in my life as, I am sure, you have too.
But, is it true? If you really think about it does everything happens for a reason?

Yes, I believe everything happens for a reason. Every little thing leads to another. But if it doesn't happen the way you want it to happen, then it's not meant to be.

before we can debate the question i think we need to define what u are asking. what do u mean by reason? do u mean reason as in everything is caused by something else, or do u mean there is some divine reason? idk if u get what i'm saying, it's in my head but idk how to word it exactly.

i'm assuming u mean does everything happen as part of a bigger purpose?

i mean yea, everything happens for a reason because of that kind of universe we live in. if i knock my drink off the desk, the reason was because my elbow hit it, the reason my elbow hit it was i was reaching for my ipod, the reason i was reaching for my ipod was because i wanted to listen to christmas music, the reason i wanted to listen to christmas music was because i saw a commercial for a chrsistmas cd on tv, the reason i saw that on tv is because it's the holiday season, the reason is the holiday season blah blah blah ect.

so i don't know, this can be a really complex question. i don't know if u are meaning for it to be that or u are just meaning it in the way little teenage girls love to refer to the phrase of everything happening for a reason so they can take some comfort when their crush rejects them.

i think belief in god or lack there of has a lot to do with what u think about this.
well, obviously

As a religious Catholic, I do believe everything happens for a reason since God has unique Plans for our lives. I always look back on my past, and I can see how things have fit together to make me who I am at present.

I don't know about others, butchyeah.

I meant does everything happen for a reason. For example: When my Dad died everyone always said "everything happens for a reason". What is that reason though? What is going to happen to me later on in life that it is necessary my dad be dead?
I hope that made it easier to understand.

I tink it depends mroe on what you beleive.
I beleive everything happens for a reason but other people beg to differ. I guess you really just have to test it out.

If one believes in God, then they're going to believe that everything happens for some, God-willed reason, and there's nothing I can tell them to change the fact, as their beliefs are mostly determined by their interpretation of religious matters, and not by logic.

If one does not believe in God, then, well, I say look up hard-determinism. Everything happens because of, well, some external cause.

So, I guess, eitherway, the answer is yes.

I think in order to answer this question we must look beyond it. To a time where amphibians ruled the streets and the world was in utter chaos. My deep philosophical mind searches for answers, but seems to always come up empty. For what reasons does this happen? Why must I travel to the outer zones of our realm to seek my fortune? I tell you the ultimate question in life... WHAT DOTH LIFE? *echo*What doth life...what doth life...what doth life.*echo*

Well one because im a christian and we're taught that what goes around comes around [not that that non-christian aren't taught that. I mean in the sense that God will punish you and what not.]
Two because, it could be just coincedence, but things seem to start to be adding up in my life.

Well, my life is going pretty terribly, and, well, I've been a pretty nice guy, trying really hard in school, and helping people out.

My life is inversely proportional to how good I have been. I have dying relatives, and tons of financial problems. I really see myself as being nothing more than a dysfunctional member of society at best.
Dead or homeless at worst.

If a God wants to teach me a lesson, he could have DEFINITELY done it with more subtle methods. Seeing as how I'm in school, I think I would be smart enough to pick up on it.

I REALLY don't see how you see that as adding up at all. You need to go back to 1st grade math.

Things don't happen for a reason. Divine intervention is merely superstition. The best we can do is free ourselves from fear and worry, and take what the world gives us for what it is.

It could...possibly. Like I said you'd have to try it out.
I wasn't thinking about everyone when I replied, mainly because it reffered to me and not the question about everyone.

What doesn't happen for a reason?

A reason, according to the dictionary, is a rational motive for a belief or action. So, yes, as far as not extending beyond the limits of our own knowledge, everything happens for a reason. Not because it teaches us a lesson or any result that occurs after; that would be a consequence.

And if everything in your life is a downfall, of course everyone has a reason as to why it is? Some people can't pay the bills because they're not working long enough hours; people may be homeless because of a fire. The fire may have occurred from a forest fire, and the forest fire might have started because some kids were fooling around with matches.

JC asked a similar question and this is what I said

Does that clear it up? I already know everything is caused by something else.
