The effects vary from picture to picture, depending on what looks good and what is already provided to you. I'm sorry I can't give you a step-by-step solution or a link, but I'm sure there are tutorials out there for Photoshop about these things.

I know a lot of icon makers use these effects and it's turned out very well, so maybe you could contact one of them through LiveJournal.

My guess would be that they played around with exposure settings, brightness/contrast, layer adjustments, and perhaps a few brushes to spruce it up.

The 2nd one kind of looks like the image was duplicated, desaturated, and set on soft light with a lowered opacity.
There was definitely some layer adjustment, and things like that with the selective color.

I'll try to look for some tutorials for the first one. But like MissHygienic said, a lot of icon makers use those effects, I'm sure you could find some icon communities on LJ and look for some tutorials.

Never underestimate what physical equipment can do, mind you. If you are taking your own pictures, these effects are reasonably easy to accomplish by means of hardware -- flashes and diffusers.

The first would be a direct flash with high saturation. This would more or less accomplish the effect; otherwise, I'd say it's a layer mask wherein the background has been darkened, some, to bring more contrast for the subject.

The second one, to get the lowered level of saturation and exposure, I am thinking the creator used a low-opacity green-gray layer, or something along these lines. Something to kind of mute the vibrance, and such. An duplicate + layer mask (overlay) could easily accomplish this effect. As far as hardware, it just looks like bad lighting and a cheap camera.

The third is either a duplicated original with altered blending options, or simply increased exposure and saturation.

Are you taking your own pictures, or working with what you already have for this endeavor?
