hair straightener, er yeah. Options

My hair is really thick and slightly wavy, depending on how I dry it. I really don't like the uhh..volume-nized look on me because it looks really funky on me. Plus, I have a weird shaped and small sized head. (haha)

The point is: I'm trying to persuade my mom to let me buy myself a hair straightener (either the Chi or the Sedu). However, she thinks it's going to damage my hair in the long run and might cause balding since a straightener pulls on your hair -_-. Well, I've done some research on both of the straighteners. Since these straighteners are supposedly higher quality than the ones you get at the drug stores, your hair should come out smoother and silky, I think. And the plates shouldn't really pull on your hair, but uh.."glides" through it. In the long run, there's usually no sign of damage, right? (and using a heat protector spray and an after-conditioner should prevent damage). Unfortunately, she's not buying it.

Any arguments that would convince her? and any comments on these straighteners for those who've used them before?

I'm using my own money, btw. It's just that I need to get my parents' consent before buying anything. I'm 17 and I have barely any freedom.

putting excessive heat on your hair even if it's from a $200 iron will damage your hair unless you want to spend money all the time on products that might not work.
if you want straight hair so bad get your hair chemically done.

Tell her how you hate the way your hair is FIZZY, BIG, THICK. How would she feel if she had to go out like that?

Using a hair straightener won't make you bald. However, it can make your hair dry. Tell her you will wash your hair with conditioner everytime to avoid dryness.

I have a Chi Nano and I don't think that it's bad for your hair -- Just make sure your hair is dry when you do it. Sometimes my hair is slightly damp -- as in not fully dry, so I think that made my hair feel more brittle. I stopped straightening it for a little while, but then I started again and I only straighten it dry now. And my hair still feels nice. :] Make sure to put on some Paul Mitchell Super Straight serum -- that works wonders! Plus, I heard it helps protect your hair. You could use that BioSilk or Biolage stuff too.


Or you can just blow-dry your hair straight. I've done it before and it comes out nice. You would just have to get the nozzle thing that connects on. :]

As for arguments... well, you could say that it is better for your hair if you use a more expensive one, but I don't know how you can convince her to buy you one. Just save up money and buy it yourself -- then she won't be able to stop you. =X

Anyways, if you condition you hair enough [you know like sitting under a blow dryer for deep condition or after you shampoo.] you'll be just fine.

word, i own a chi. honestly i don't see much difference from one i got at target to this one.. only because my hair is already somewhat straight except the ends. what everybody else said, try not to straighten when your hair is wet or even slightly damp because that 'steams' your hair basically. avoid blowdrying and straightening together, do one or the other.

My friend has a parent like that. He can buy his own things as long as his dad doesn't see them, and if you get him gifts his dad doesn't like he is likely to take them away. It's really lame, but we only live a block away so we keep all his cool stuff here.

When do you turn 18? I am sure you could blow dry your hair straight until then. If you must have it just buy it. Unless they watch your every move you could straighten it when you get out of the shower (after it's dry of course) and hide it. If your parents ask tell them you used a blow dryer.

Personally, I like to use leave-in conditioner (Infusium 23 works the best, and it's cheap!!) and let it dry completely (NEVER straighten your hair while it's wet). I straighten it and the heat from the Chi helps smooth my hair along with the conditioner, it's the best!! Avoid using a blow dryer, they are terrible for your hair. And depending on your kind of hair, those cheap drug store brands might end up crisping your hair worse than anything... The Chi is worth the money you invest in it. Also get trims every couple of months and you should have no problem with your hair...

I always receive compliments about my hair. And no, I'm not bald LOL!

I got my Chi Nano for free since my boyfriend's sister owns a hair and nail salon..


The best product, imo, for straightening serum is Paul Mitchell. It smells great, stays on well, and doesn't leave that nasty oily feeling in your hands, like cheaper brands would.


BTW My sister got this T3 Tourmaline Cermaic hair straightener and it's pretty awesome too. I like that it has different heat settings, whereas my Chi Nano doesn't. I saw the same one she had, at Sephora and it was running for maybe $180. But that was when I check last year... It's probably cheaper now or they have a new one out now. :/

I've always blow dried & straightened my hair together, and my hair is perfectly healthy. You just have to be careful and use lots of heat protectant and use a deep conditioner often.

Wow, that long? Wait, your hair's not even that long, is it? I forgot. It looks short form the pictures I've seen of you, before. Well, short, imo. My hair takes about maybe 3 hours to fully dry, and I have thick hair.


I usually only spend about 5-10 minutes straightening my hair since most of it is somewhat straight and my hair's not that long. Back when my hair was long, it would take about 15 minutes or something.

It sucks becuase my hair is really thick, and since I cut my hair straight, to straighten the ends completely stick-straight, it takes me more time, and I'm usually lazy lol. So I leave the ends slightly curled. Plus it doesn't damage the ends as much since I don't spend lot of time straightening it.
