I was watching the Discovery Channel. There was some show about Nostradamus on, and they kept mentioning 9/11. Over and over again they said "It was the worst attack..." "Most horrifying...". I can't help but to disagree, but IT WAS NOT THE WORST!! 2,993 people died in that attack. Sure, a lot of innocent lives, but what about Hiroshima?
90,000-140,000 completely innocent people died in that attack, why isn't that considered the most tragic ever? When that happened we, as Americans, were no better than the terrorists were on 9/11. I would dare say, we were much worse. What about the 72,000,000 people that died in WWII? Why isn't that worse than 9/11? Or the 40,000,000 that died in WWI? WHAT ABOUT THE 25,000 TROOPS THAT DIED AS A RESULT OF THE 9/11 ATTACK? I hate how Americans are like the emo teenage girl that wants everyone to feel sorry for her. There have been so many worse things than 9/11. Get your head out of your ass and take a look around you. Jesus Christ. |

They didn't care because it was so last century.
And they probably meant worst attack on the U.S. itself.. as in US soil. Hiroshima (along with Nagasaki) was in Japan. ![]() |

Still. I think people should be more considerate when saying it was the worst because, based on total number of deaths, it wasn't. |

^ Yes, but you said "worst attack" as in worst attack on US soil. That's probably what they meant. They don't care about numbers. Even in the Vietnam war there were more troops who died than 9/11. But once again, and I apologize if I sound redundant, but they're talking about the devastation and crap that happened. ESPECIALLY since it was kind of a surprise attack (well not really, as rumors have told me), since the "war on terror" (and pretty much all those other wars after the Civil War) have taken place overseas...
And I'm really stressing on the "domestic" aspect of the opinion stated on the show (or whatever it was on that channel). |

If that's what they meant, I have no gripe. But most Americans act like everything is about us, and it's not. I mean, are we even the most powerful country anymore?

^^truetrue; but on the other hand, we're gonna have to start worrying about other countries-i don't want another world war here, but it looks like that's what's trying to happen. eventually countries are going to side with us and somebody's going to attack somebody else and...boom. world war.
If that's what they meant, I have no gripe. But most Americans act like everything is about us, and it's not. I mean, are we even the most powerful country anymore? yeah, most. what about the people who don't... personally, i think 9/11 was staged. |

I meant 25,000 troops as the number of troops that have died thus far in iraq. I don't know where you're getting your numbers from, but Americans, as of October 2007, make up 3,840 of the deaths in Iraq.Still. I think people should be more considerate when saying it was the worst because, based on total number of deaths, it wasn't. I think it's mostly personal opinion. What makes a disaster a disaster? I don't think American's are selfish. At least not in the part of the country I live in. If American's were selfish they wouldn't be over in Iraq and Afghanistan working to help them get their government under control. |

I found it on wikipedia. I know that's a bunk website, and I apologize.
A disaster is, by definition: 1. An occurrence causing widespread destruction and distress; a catastrophe. 2. A grave misfortune. |

personally, i think 9/11 was staged. ^ Same - there's a lot of unanswered questions. I know I've read up on things and heard from other people about how the President (or someone in our government) knew about an attack beforehand. I'll get back to you on this, as this isn't exactly a "omg wtf happened in 9/11?!" debate. Rather, this is about it being the "worst disaster". And might i just stress that they are probably talking about domestic disasters. It is most certainly NOT the worst disaster ever, but it is pretty bad, I guess. It didn't cause "widespread" destruction. But I guess you have to look at both sides of the argument. You can't believe everything you see on TV. Of course they're going to make a big deal about 9/11. It's sad that I heard more references to 9/11 than Hurricane Katrina. As for this current war we're in -- I wouldn't say anything yet because the war's not over. Numbers fluctuate. |

But the death toll can't go down. We can't save the people that already lost their lives. It will do nothing but rise for however much longer we are in this war.
AND I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT HURRICANE KATRINA. I am such a douche. I hate myself. |

I would really like to bury my head in shame. I can't believe that. I really, honestly, won't be able to forgive myself for this. |

Well, for one the attack came as such a suprise. America wasn't at war (as with Hiroshima and Nagasaki) and then suddenly to have an unprovoked attack on one of her most iconic buildings with the catastrophic loss of life that went with it; you can understand how they say that in that instant, the world was changed.

I understand that aspect.
I just... don't think it should be labeled as the worst. It was the worst attack on American soil. It wasn't worse than those poor Holocaust victims. I think the world changed after that. And it wasn't worse than either of the World Wars, which also changed the world. I don't think we should forget about the other tragedies. I think they should be talked about the same amount, if not more, than 9/11. Wasn't December 7, 1941 a day that was supposed to live on infamy? It seems as though most people have forgotten about that, because it doesn't affect us anymore. We aren't in that war anymore, so it's not important anymore. |

I'm sorry if I came off as someone who had American pride -- because I most certainly do not. It's because there's so much shady incidents that have happened (eh, let's not get into this) and how people are putting so much emphasis on certain incidents while neglecting others. Same goes for Katrina - it's more recent, yet it seems like people are moving on. As for international devastations - There are people out there who care about it. It's sad to say, but honestly the government has such a significant amount of influence over what is said and shown o television. That's why I say that people should not always believe what they see or hear. It's due to these kinds of publications that causes viewers to believe what they see, and suddenly everyone's talking about 9/11 as if it happened yesterday. You see what i mean? Oh wow that was a large paragraph. But yea, I'll post more later. Sorry if some of that sounded BLAH. My brain's kinda fried right now. ![]() |

Propaganda. They've already made plenty of movies about 9/11.
I think what someone considers a disaster is of their own opinion. It's something personal that matters to you. Obviously, the people who lost their parents and family in the attack are going to be more affected than someone who didn't even know where the trade centers were located. It got us involved in a war, I think that's pretty signifant. I'm not saying that there weren't other factors in the US going to war, but I'd say that aftermath of the attack added to the reason why they call it a disaster. |

also we're talking about something on disney channel here. are the world wars significant? of course they are. but see the difference between them and 9/11 to the viewers of the disney channel? one was in their lifetime, the other wasn't. i'm agreeing with everyone else and going with they didn't really mean the worst disaster.
