One of my best friend's dad just killed himself on Monday. We've been trying to deal with it and help her the best we can all week. I'm mentally and physically exhausted; I've been at her house every night, everyone's brought so much food over. She's been taking it really well, but she occasionally has some breakdowns. She somewhat blames herself, saying like maybe if she had told him she loved him more or included him more, he would have been happier, and how she saw it coming cause he was suddenly happy like three days ago and the policeman told her that people do that when they make the decision to let it all go. Thursday was the wake, which wasn't too sad, but just really...strange since his body was there. Friday was awful though; the funeral was Friday morning and I couldn't hold back any tears at all. I couldn't look at either her or her mom because it was just too sad and we were all trying to hold them back so we could be strong for her and stuff. I just don't know what to say to her. I'm usually the go-to gal for listening and advice, but all I can do now is listen and just stay with her because she'll really need all of her friends when it actually hits her (it hasn't hit me yet, either).
Have you ever known someone who committed suicide? Were you really close to them? How did you deal with it? Were there ways in which you helped someone out who was hurt by it? |

Let me first start off by saying that suicide is wrong. In fact, it's illegal. If you know of someone who seems like they might suicide, and don't try to stop them, you are an accomplice in murder.
Now, what's done is done. First tell your friend there's no use regretting what she could have done. She could have done millions of things. But that doesn't change the fact that her dad committed suicide. I'm not saying that she should forget about everything, but she first must forgive herself and her dad (possibly her mom). Secondly, it'd be a lot easier to give emotional advice and support if you or we knew the reason why he committed suicide. Was it family issues? Did he lose his job? Etc. At any rate, the most important thing that your friend must do is to let go of thinking that she "could have" done something, but didn't. |

What the heck. If someone wants to kill them selfs, they will, no matter if you try to stop them or not. Just because they kill them selfs doesnt mean you helped kill them. |

QUOTE If you know of someone who seems like they might suicide, and don't try to stop them, you are an accomplice in murder. helping someone is harder than said, especially an unstable person. Sometimes you dont even realize how serious the situation is. But I do agree with yor advice on wanting her to let go of her regrets. it really is the best way to go. She shouldnt feel guilty. |

explain to me what depression is. is it something you "think" you have, and it's all in your mind, or is it some genetic thing you can't get rid of?

I don't think its exactly "fixed" with medication...it just makes me you act like a happier person, not nesscarily like yourself.

I'm pretty sure committing suicide is illegal. And I'm saying that if you don't TRY to stop the suicide-ee, then you are an accomplice in murder.
As for depression, it's what secret agent said. It's chemical imbalance. However, it doesn't happen naturally, it's self-induced. Like for example, Hunger is lactic acid eating away through the mucous lining your stomach, but that only happens if you don't eat. I'm no expert in the field, but my educated guess is that depression is caused by a lack of whatever chemical it is that makes people "happy". Some drugs (prescription and other drugs) can release an artificial version of this chemical, but it probably has side effects. It's also what happens after you sniff cocaine, and the high goes away, you sink into depression because you don't have enough of whatever that chemical is, dunno the name. |

I didn't ask if it was illegal, I think that's a stupid law anyway. What're they gonna do, put the person in jail? Oh, too bad you can't, cause they're dead. What kind of a deterrent is that?

This post kinda reminded me of the numerous suicides in our university, which quite coincidentally, happens near finals...
![]() Anyways, I don't know anyone who committed suicide, but I do know some people who was close to committing suicide. And yes, I am close to them. |

A lot of people at my old High School have been killing themselves. It's really devastating because I live in a pretty small town.
I think the count now is somewhere around 10... But, my dad died 2 years ago. He accidentally killed himself. It's no ones fault. I know your friend is going through a really hard time and I don't want to put pressure on you, but if it weren't for my friends I don't know how I would have made it through that. They were amazing and relentless in their help and understanding. That's something I will never ever forget and I will always be greatful to my amazing friends. |

One of my brothers friends had Jumped in front of a on comming train a couple of years ago.And supprizingly He took it better then I did.Or at least from what I saw. The boy was only 11 when he did it and I could never understand how an innocent boy could get so unhappy untill his father came foreward that he was molesting him.
I honestly dont know how me or my brother moved on..We never forgot about him..We just realized that he was in a better place away from his father. And thats what he wanted. |

The very idea of suicide is just...horrific. It's so saddening as the family and the friends that are left are always the ones questioning themselves over the 'what ifs' and 'maybes'.
Your friend will be in all of our prayers. |

I am very sorry to heard. That sucks a lot. I hope your friend will deal with it and move on even though its easy to say but hard to do. Honestly, I don't know what I'll do if I was in her position. Sigh* If I was her I would be more than happy to have a friend like you. The only thing you can do is talk to her whenever shes down to cheer her up.

Look, I'm not saying it SHOULD be illegal, I'm just saying that it IS. And it DOES mean something, because if you don't TRY to stop them, then you are an accomplice in murder, and the state (or someone else) can sue you.
I'm just saying that it's BAD. Suicide is never a right answer. NEVER. Not when you've lost every cent you have. Not when you family and friends are killed. Certainly not after you've been raped. It's just WRONG. It's like saying, "I lost everything I have in Vegas, so it's OK for me to rob a bank right? I've got nothing to lose." Well, suicide effects other people too, just like robbing a bank. |

Well, obviously it's not a good thing, but I'm not gonna sit here criticizing the poor guy for it. Obviously he wasn't doing too well and if he needed to go so far as to end his life over it, he had problems. OBVIOUSLY I know it affects other people too, what do you think the topic is about? I'm not condoning it.
Anyway, my friend is doing really, really well. She came back to school yesterday and she's been able to keep her mind off it for a while. I got her all caught up on the homework she missed and now she's able to like...talk about it without breaking down. She's being really strong; I'm proud of her. |

On the whole illegal subject, I don't think your thesis on "If you knew they were going to commit suicide you could be charged as a murder" or whatever you said, I don't think that's what the law is about. Neither do I believe that committing suicide and completing the goal is what that law is about either. I believe the law is about attempting yet failing at the process, and if you fail, that is what they prosecute you for.

"Charged as a murderer?"
I said: "Accomplice in murder." I believe it's only true in some states, but I've definitely heard of it somewhere before. Plus, people don't usually get convicted because they can just say they tried. |
