Who cares if they have racial prejudices? I also hate when people label others as "racist". At least put an "a" in front of it. They're a racist, they have racially biased ideas, etc.
Anyways. They're on a show called "BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION." They have a target demographic. They're going to do what they can to appeal to that demographic. |

what would they show on WET?
WET won't ever exist, not because it would be called racist, but it would be pointless in the first place. |

what are they going to show on WET? Yuppies moving into town. ![]() But, seriously, popular modern "black culture" has served to really hurt the African American population in my opinion. Have you ever watched BET? Have you ever listened to the radio? In the same way that rock music has been designed to make little white kids think being sad is cool, mainstream rap has been built to ensure little black kids that spinners, bitches, forties, and broken English are cool. It's embarrassing really. [Kill a rock star] P.S. Watch This Video. That This Aired On BET Is Certain Irony. Oh, am I getting a bit off topic? Yeah. |

It's embarrassing really. i'd agree, in my personal opinion BET is a failure anyway. it typically displays only one type of people. i watch some shows on there some but not that many because i don't really relate the black people they usually show, and i'm not a fan of the main stream rap they play. but i don't think BET is "racist" it's there for a target audience just like every other channel out there it's all about the name i guess, if it was called anything else then i don't think people would be concerned with it being racist black history month we spend the majority time in history learning about what white people did... it's the same thing to me, WET and white history month, what's going to be different on that channel or that month? nothing, we already have those channels and we already study about white history constantly. so u can say OMG IF WE DID THAT U WOULD CALL US RACIST!!!!! yea maybe so, but who cares because that's never going to happen because there isn't a need for either of those, they already exist, they just don't have the word white pinned to them i think ur opinion on if we need black history month comes from ur personal experience, if in ur history classes u went in depth about black people in history then yea black history month seems pointless. but for me, black history month is the only time we really did that. |

In a time and place where blacks were not being given fair representation in the media, BET was a beacon for a better future. However, that future has been hijacked by sponsorship advertisement and Viacom fat cats. BET has turned into an exploitative and oppressive force. It demeans, belittles, and stereotypes the people it is intended to uplift. It's awful. The problem is that the target audience has been created as a consumer audience. BET no longer serves any meaningful purpose aside from making rich white people richer. Man, where is William Greaves when you need him? |

then answer my post above what are they going to show on WET? They would show lot's and lot's of porn, and we wouldn't be put to shame by blacks. After all, it's wet. i agree and feel that BET more than anything is just a representation of how the white people at viacom think black people are it sucks that people watch that and think that's how it is and it sucks more than younger black kids watch it and think that since they're black, that's what they're supposed to like word It also sucks that people watch and the station makes enough money to survive. |

I thought she was a complete stoner. yea she acts like a complete idiot on tv so i have a hard time taking her very seriously besides i thought her blog wasn't all that good, she didn't give me some profound new idea, it's been said a million times, we all should be equal bla bla bla bla yea yea ok, but we aren't |

I think any [race]television is a failure from the start. How 'cool' is it creating a television chanel for just ONE race? (even though they claim otherwise). This is why I keep saying that America is too free. I can see how a specific language chanel or nationality chanel can pass. (We've got that in my country. We've got German chanels, Arabic chanels, Spanish chanels, Congolese chanels, Portugese chanels and many more).
I don't think it's racist, I just think it's getting overboard. Sure, Black people went through difficult times back in the days of huge gowns and bow ties BUT how does having BET make things better? Instead, it's promoting more animosity between races. I think the only reason why WET will never work out is because YES, it would be considered racist. Come on, there used to be all White neighbourhoods, and all White buses and all White this and that. Solely for racial segregation! Now, if slavery / holocaust / crime to humanity never happened then WET all the way. As for Black history month, there's already a topic on that. |

the civil rights movement doesn't count as difficult times for black people? that was WAY more recent. yea slavery was difficult, but even after it was ended, it continued to be difficult because they still weren't treated equally.
i mean i think it's like nate said, the reason for BET was because there wasn't much black representation in the media. although now i don't think they're being represented very well, at least not on BET |

Blacks had it WAY worse then than whatever they're going through now / went through recently.
Sure, there wasn't much Black representation in the media but I truly do not see how creating an All Black chanel helped things. I mean, people were fighting against having All White [things] but created BET? Where's the 'equality' there? In the long run, it was a tremendous failure. |

Blacks had it WAY worse then than whatever they're going through now / went through recently. and i agree with that but i don't see how that matters at all thats like saying we can't disagree or want anything changed because it could be worse. u can that about anything QUOTE Sure, there wasn't much Black representation in the media but I truly do not see how creating an All Black chanel helped things. I mean, people were fighting against having All White [things] but created BET? Where's the 'equality' there? In the long run, it was a tremendous failure. it's not like no other race other than black people are ever on BET. yes the majority are black, the same as if u flip to most other channels and the majority are white and there's some other races thrown in. they should just change the name of the channel and it wouldn't be a problem anymore. this channel does need to exist, because it represents a certain group of people, a certain type of music and the people who are part of that should have a channel to watch. i know a lot of people who aren't black and watch BET because that's the music they like. i don't know about anyone else's channels but as far as mine go there isn't another channel that u can watch if ur into the main stream rap music they play. i don't care all that much for it personally but no i don't think it's racist, the only problem i see is that it has black in the title. i'm not so much offended by that because it sounds racist, but because it makes it seem like that's what's entertaining to all black people, and that's not true. there just needs to be more channels that represent rap/hip hop culture not specifically black people, because one channel can't represent a whole races view of entertainment anyway. they'll still give black people media representation because there will be plenty of black people on there, since hip hop and rap is mostly black artists anyway. |

I am horrible and very misinformed. I have never seen BET. I've only heard of it. It's already a turn off. Black Entertainment Television? Ha!
QUOTE(JC) and i agree with that but i don't see how that matters at all QUOTE(Sandra) Sure, Black people went through difficult times back in the days of huge gowns and bow ties BUT how does having BET make things better? Instead, it's promoting more animosity between races.

first of all things, no one cares who adrienne is or what she blogs...she's a "has been" reality tv star and i wish that people like her would stop manipulating the media to rejuvenate their lifeless careers.
second of all, i don't complain about telemundo. or BBC. or any other shows that have targeted audiences. why do you need a channel dedicated to whites when there are television programs on every single television channel featuring whites? i mean, lets be serious here, there aren't many shows that portray african american interests on major networks (ABC, FOX, CBS): shows like "back to you" and "prison break" (targeted mainly towards whites) had season premiers that didn't feature one african american, which is why there is BET channel in the first place. |
